EARLY DETECTION: CHECK YOURSELF FOR BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the UK, with nearly 55,000 diagnoses each year. Early detection is crucial in improving survival rates, and performing regular self-exams is a simple but effective way to spot any unusual changes in your breasts.

HOW TO PERFORM A SELF-EXAM:

1. Look: Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Look for any changes in the size, shape, or appearance of your breasts, including dimpling, puckering, or changes in skin texture. Check for any redness, rash, or visible lumps.

2. Feel: Raise your arm and use the pads of your fingers to feel your breasts in a circular motion. Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side, from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage. Use different pressure levels to feel all the breast tissue: light pressure for the skin and tissue just beneath, medium pressure for the middle of your breasts, and firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back.

3. Check for Discharge: Gently squeeze your nipples to check for any discharge, such as watery, milky, or yellow fluid or blood.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A CHANGE:

Finding a change doesn’t necessarily mean you have breast cancer, but it’s important to see your GP as soon as possible. Most changes are benign, but early consultation with your healthcare provider is key to addressing any concerns promptly.

Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer (LFBC) is committed to raising awareness and supporting those affected by breast cancer. For more information, visit www.lfbc.org.uk or contact us at info@lfbc.org.uk.

Together, we can make a difference. Regular self-exams and early detection saves lives.
