Albion Lodge CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF FAMILY CARE IN THE HEART OF WORCESTERSHIRE

62

Hanley Swan, Worcestershire - Albion Lodge Retirement Home is celebrating four decades of caring for residents with the warmth, dignity and personal attention that has been at the heart of the family-run home since it first opened its doors.

Opening in 1986 by Colin and Jean Darwent, Albion Lodge began with a simple but deeply personal purpose: to provide dedicated care for their own parents alongside a small group of residents. That original philosophy, to care for people as they would their own family, continues to guide the home today.

Now led by Colin and Jean’s son, Andrew Darwent, together with Care Manager Lindsay Taylor-Savidge, Albion Lodge remains a family-run home where individualised care and residents’ independence are valued.

Over the years, the home has grown while retaining its close-knit character. Today, a team of more than 40 dedicated staff brings together more than 300 years of combined experience, with a number of employees having spent decades at Albion Lodge. The team includes staff members with many, many years of service, reflecting the strong sense of community and continuity that has become a defining feature of the home. (albionlodge.co.uk)

Situated in the village of Hanley Swan, close to the Malvern Hills, Albion Lodge occupies a period residence surrounded by two acres of lawns and gardens. The peaceful Worcestershire setting provides residents with a tranquil home while keeping them close to the village community and local amenities.

The home provides 24-hour care and long-term and permanent residential care, with support designed around each individual resident. Facilities include three lifts, disabled access, specialist baths and a vehicle available for families. Albion Lodge is also supported by local healthcare professionals and visiting services.

For Andrew Darwent, who has been part of Albion Lodge from the very beginning, the anniversary represents much more than a milestone. “Being here along with other members of the family, from the very beginning when Mum and Dad set up Albion, has been a real privilege. As a family, we have always strived to care for people as we would like our own family to be cared for, and this has held true for over forty years.”

The anniversary also provides an opportunity to recognise the generations of residents, relatives and staff who have helped shape Albion Lodge into the community it is today.

That sense of community is continuing into the future. In 2025, Albion Meadows opened next door to Albion Lodge, providing one- and two-bedroom apartments for people aged over 55 who want to enjoy independent living while having the reassurance of support close by. The development creates a natural connection between independent living and the established care community at Albion Lodge.

As Albion Lodge looks ahead, its aim remains rooted in the same values that inspired Colin and Jean Darwent when they opened the home: providing a place where people feel safe, valued and genuinely cared for.
