The Golden Thread of information with ASSA ABLOY Openings Studio Suite.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is revolutionising the way we build, providing the tools needed for more efficient planning, design and building processes. The evolution of BIM technology has coincided with the tightening of building regulations, with emphasis placed on the ‘golden thread’ approach outlined by Dame Judith Hackett in her report, ‘Building a safer future.

What considerations need to be made during door specification and defining the performance criteria, and how can BIM software enable accurate collaborative working and the golden thread?

Openings Studio can be used to extract information to give an overview of a building, which includes performance criteria against each individual door. This means the specifier can work with the manufacturer to develop the specification and create a digital collaboration tool where the architect can view the data, information and technical data sheet around the products suggested.

The technical datasheet will carry any aesthetic variations available, and the live working environment can be seen by all parties who can make selections and changes where required.

The Mobile App Holistic & collaborative working

BIM is a tool that reduces waste and risk of error and facilitates the sharing of detailed information throughout the design, construction, and

operational phases of a project, which ultimately results in safer and more efficient buildings.

When it comes to doorsets and ironmongery in particular, using BIM-enabled tools such as ASSA ABLOY’s Openings Studio™ can truly unlock the potential of BIM.

An extension to Openings Studio has recently been developed, which offers a mobile app that directly accesses this data for use during the door installation process, ensuring full validity of the finished product prior to project completion. The app gives access to the door data, enables easy comparison between product at last review and current review, captures details, and facilitates detailed inspections and reporting. It then can capture details of any subsequently completed works so this cyclic process can start over again at the next inspection.

Asset Tag

Every door logged in Openings Studio is automatically assigned a unique asset tag, which can be affixed to the door as either a QR code or RFID Tag. It enables direct access to the door details, including product specification, hardware schedules, product information, inspection reports, digital images and change management tracking.

The use of Openings Studio from Specification to Product in Service and beyond captures the Golden Thread of information in relation to doors and ironmongery and ensures door compliance at all times. Keeping people safe, now and in the future.
