My art combines the elements of Japanese and Western art, particularly within nature – looking closely and carefully, combining Japanese composition with
Italian Renaissance colour, in
appreciation of the small, but beautiful things that we see every day but take for granted. Through my work, I concentrate on creating a positive spirit to help revitalize, refresh and encourage the strength we need to find joy in our daily living. My works are assemblages, collages with a wide variety of materials and techniques.
I enjoy
the feel of paper rather than canvas, the tactile, sculptural quality of collage on wooden boxes or panels and the freedom to expand into a series of images strung together. I continue to explore the fragility of beauty through its more delicate life forms – orchids,
irises, hummingbirds, seashells, a tree blossom, a tiny chickadee, for example. I am constantly in awe of the hidden strength/perseverance of these seemingly fragile natural forms. For me, it is a reminder of the duality of being human – the frailty of mortality that we all must face, mirrored with our life force/spirit to celebrate and cherish this momentary vitality. “A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” This statement, by John Keats, best describes what I am
attempting to do with every stroke of my brush. Joy and enjoy. Twenty years ago I helped to start the art studio tour in the entire Tantramar Marsh Area. Over
20 artists and artisans have been opening their studios every October for a weekend to the public. The tour is called "Art Across the Marsh Studio Tour".
It is always held on the third weekend in
October, which this year will be Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Th
pm. The website is:
