I am a clay sculptor that finds a true connection with my environment. Nature inspires and guides my hands in all I see, hear and touch.When I create, I get engaged in its development and this allows me to connect with the material. Clay has a language and as it speaks to me, like the ebb and flow of the tide, I only need to remember not to fight against it. I take a deep breath, relax and allow it to flow through me and the communication begins. Mary Jane Lundy is a Craft Nova Scotia Master Artisan. She graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University, Halifax, Nova Scotia with a BFA major in Ceramics. As a clay sculptor, she creates to narrate her story and pay homage to the places she is from. Mary Jane was raised in St. George, New Brunswick and currently lives in East Dover, Nova Scotia. As a young girl she spent her summers


exploring sea life on the Bay of Fundy shores. Her


studio, Crescent Clay, overlooks the


beautiful Dutchman’s Cove which is connected to the Atlantic Ocean. Mary Jane's ceramic studio practice is


based on hand-built slab clay construction using red earthenware clay native to Nova Scotia. Her work emphasizes surface decoration


using repetitive, visual patterning through a variety of techniques - such as pressing found objects into


under-glaze layering combined with transparent over-glazes creates depth and glaze pooling throughout the imprinted sculpture. This makes her sculptures highly touchable and interesting.
