To be an artist is to be committed to the process. Without commitment there is hesitancy and imitation. The truth is, that to express yourself in the most authentic, original way, means that you have to know yourself and be willing to explore and excavate and explore some more — and that’s not easy. Much like the way a pearl is formed from irritation and a diamond through pressure, great works come from hard work, craftsmanship and knowing yourself. It’s easy to take a path that’s already there, it is much harder to forge one that is yours, and yours alone. In photography, I was drawn to the abstract from the start. As makers and viewers of the work, we get to interpret the patterns, structure, texture and colour based on our own experiences and to let both the story and the aesthetic move the work th It’s a very personal connection and I love that about the images.
through us. It means that I am only part of the work. The rest
of the art is in the eye of the beholder and even then the feeling can change with each look into it. My images capture rock at their radiant best self. I
see my job as the process of uncovering the “good soul and joy” in the rock, in a sense taking its portrait and presenting it in the best possible light. As with all great portraiture,
the beauty spirit is
expression of the thing itself. Finally, it is this philosophy of positive energy, of in combination with art, that drives my work. The
titles of my work inspire with love and courage and confidence reminding us to close the gap between who we are and what we want to be. As Mayan Master Teacher, Miguel Angel Vergara encouraged me, “Polish yourself and from you the ripples will be felt.” That matters to me.
