Low-back pain is the No. 1 cause of disability worldwide and is the top reason opioids are prescribed. As chiropractors, we have the unique ability to reverse this trend. And yet, limited insurance coverage serves as a barrier to our ability to help everyone who needs chiropractic care. That’s why Palmer College is launching “The Case for Chiropractic: How Chiropractic Care Benefits Patients and Insurers,” an effort to advocate to policymakers and insurance carriers to increase coverage for chiropractic care, thereby growing understanding of and accessibility to chiropractic care. From 2015 to 2018, Palmer College commissioned Gallup to conduct an annual study of Americans’ attitudes about and experiences with chiropractic care, as well as other methods for addressing neck and back pain. The studies found that two-thirds of Americans believe chiropractors are effective at treating neck and back pain. Yet nearly half of all U.S. adults don’t know if their insurance covers chiropractic care.
To truly address the opioid epidemic, we must take steps to educate more people about the benefits of chiropractic care and work with policymakers to increase insurance coverage and accessibility. Over the next year, I and other members of the Palmer community will go on the road to meet with state associations and others to present the white paper and tool kit that goes with it. We ask alumni to continue to spotlight the importance of chiropractic care and use your networks to share the countless stories you no doubt have that showcase how chiropractic care has changed the lives of your patients. Chiropractic is built on a daring history
of driven individuals who worked tirelessly to advance our profession and bring a new form of health care to millions of people. As we prepare to celebrate 125 years since the founding of Palmer College, it’s up to us to continue to carry this torch forward and do what we do best — help people feel and live optimally through chiropractic care, without use of drugs or surgery.
