Work in progress T
he recovery continues. For the air travel industry, this has been the leading mantra over the past year or so, as we emerge little by little from the shadow of the pandemic. Ramifications from the war in Ukraine and ongoing Covid-19 outbreaks in Asia continue to pose concerns, but there is reason for optimism – passenger traffic is up across the board from this time in 2021, yet still well down from 2019 figures, and we have already seen parts of the industry struggle with the rising demand ahead of the summer. The speed at which rules and regulations are returned to their pre-Covid states has become an ongoing debate, leading to concerns over so-called ‘ghost flights’ – particularly for low-cost airlines, which have been getting back to business at a faster pace than their legacy counterparts. We examine both aspects of the situation on pages 8 and 24. We have also recently seen the easing of social distancing and mask-wearing regulations on European flights, which should be a relief to operators ahead of the summer period. Air travel faces challenges beyond Covid-19, of course, as increasing focus over climate change concerns loom over the industry. We look at developments in sustainable aviation fuel and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft on pages 11 and 32, respectively – two topics that could potentially prove to be of huge importance to the future of aviation. While much remains to happen before the effects of the pandemic can be fully shaken off, it is heartening to see developments across the industry moving ahead at pace, continually improving operations, equipment and infrastructure. Until then, the recovery continues.
