IN PARTNERSHIP
The online GPS and live temperature- tracking devices inside and outside of the storage throughout the whole transportation timeline, providing immediate temperature reports for the customer. This way, the active cold chain is proven and, moreover, the GPS during transportation. This improves the control of the correct route taken (wrong loading, etc) but also helps in case of loss or theft recovery.
New generation data Next to location and live temperature, humidity and shock sensors are integrated. The new generation data loggers even measure light events, recording the opening and closing of the packaging. To obtain the highest safety level regarding temperature, the goods need to be transported in the correct packaging. In the case of temperature-controlled shipments, phase change material (PCM) technology in the thermo-boxes is likely the best choice. This is because the lifespan of the validated temperature time can be extended if stored at the correct temperature, leading to our next point: the booking of passive cooling of air freight or land freight. In the case of air freight, storage of the shipment at the correct temperature at the departing airport and also arriving airport is crucial for the product integrity in case of any irregularities. Monitoring every step and interface of a multi-modal and well-prepared journey, with live tracking devices, allows for a proactive and well- coordinated intervention if need be. With the use of the devices, several cold
chain errors can be prevented, such as the wrong storage at destination airports. Let us illustrate the latter with examples taken from describes a case where the product wasn’t stored in the correct conditions.
Continued cold storage is essential Throughout a transport project from Europe to the US, a solid cold chain at -20°C needs to be maintained at all times. When working with the US authorities to import materials, it is well known that the goods may be held for a certain length of time at US customs, waiting for Food and Drug Administration or US Department of Agriculture clearance. Therefore, the passive cooling air freight booking is essential, so the shipment can be transferred to the
correct temperature storage after arriving at the destination airport. In combination with PCM thermo-packaging, the validation and safety of the goods will be secured (see above). The monitoring of the outside and inside temperatures, as well as tracking of storage, gives insight into the correct handling by third-party companies such as airlines. Due to human error or technical issues,
the passive cooling options at the destination airport in the US may not be possible. The information flow through these devices allows us to act without delay: contacting emergency staff at the airline, swapping the packaging with freshly conditioned boxes, or using active cooling vehicles to maintain the temperature in order to prevent any damage.
