Materials Getting ready
arnessing its skills to manufacture high-quality fine wire and wire- based components used in medical devices, SMT launched its EXERA brand in 2016, which encompasses fine wire, wire-based components and coatings. SMT has always been a leader in steel innovation. Founded by Göran Fredrik Göransson in 1862, it was the first company to successfully use the Bessemer method for steel production on an industrial scale. Since then, its focus has remained the same: high-quality, investment in research and development, and a close relationship with customers. Now it’s time for the company’s next chapter in history – Sandvik will separate SMT and will become a stand-alone company listed at the Nasdaq Stockholm Exchange on 31 August, 2022. The new listed company will be renamed Alleima. The separation from Sandvik is expected to provide Alleima with a clearer mandate to execute its strategy to drive growth, materials innovation, operational and

commercial excellence and sustainability. Alleima as a stand-alone listed company will be able to further strengthen its position as a world-leading manufacturer of advanced stainless steels, special alloys and heating systems for the most demanding industries.
Innovators in stainless steel SMT is best known for its duplex stainless steels. The manufacturing of stainless steel began in 1921, and since then the business area has worked hard as an innovator to manufacture steel products for a vast array of industries and applications.
Since entering the medical devices field,
SMT’s history and expertise in stainless steel has been invaluable. The EXERA medical wire is manufactured from stainless steels, precious metals and biocompatible alloys, creating customisable high-quality wire. SMT’s ability to develop custom designs to meet customer’s goals is already setting them apart from the competition in the medical devices field.
Perfecting its expertise in steel production since 1862, Sandvik Materials Technology (SMT) continues to thrive in the medical devices field as a stand-alone company, Alleima.
Added footprint and capabilities SMT has already grown as a specialist in materials and configurations for medical applications such as vascular therapy, sensing and neurostimulation. In 2021 it acquired Accuratech Group consisting of three companies – Polyfil is a manufacturer of micro wire and tubes, wire insulations and micro technologies. Galvarex specialises in surface treatments, electroplating and assembly of semi- finished and finished micro-electronic products. Polyflex focuses solely on assembly of semi-finished and finished micro-electronic products. SMT’s medical business unit is a member of IVAM (a global association of companies and institutes specialising in microtechnology, nanotechnology and advanced materials for the medical industry), as well as a member of China Association for Medical Devices Industry. Working closely with customers, SMT forms working partnerships with medical device developers to choose the best materials, drawing on unique expertise in molecular technology and extensive insight into industrial processes to ensure that customers meet their goals.
SMT is set to become an established leader in material development. Utilising its expertise in stainless steels, special alloys, titanium and zirconium, the company’s online technical centre offers free access to material datasheets, corrosion tables, and other useful information.
Sustainability goals
Besides being an innovator in materials development SMT is also looking into new sustainable solutions for its operations. SMT aims to achieve 90% circularity, halve its CO2
and safety, and provide transparency in all its operations and goals. ●
SMT has been world leading in steel production since in the 1800s. Today, focus is on making advanced steel and reducing the CO2
footprint – the target is to use 90% recycled steel by 2030. Medical Device Developments /
