Only completely fluorinated polymers like PTFE or PFA show no absorption at this wavelength region. A good example is the tubing for artificial respiration (tracheostomy) from soft PVC. An inflatable balloon must be welded leak-tight outside the main tube. There is a small channel in the main tube wall to inflate the balloon, which needs to stay open at the welding position and not collapse. The tube assembly is rotated in the focused laser beam absorbing part of it in the balloon wall and the upper layer of the tube melting both together. With the laser power in the appropriate process window, the small channel in the tube wall is not melted and stays open.

The traditional wavelengths for laser welding of plastics are 800–1,100nm, at which all polymers are transparent for the laser. To obtain absorption of the laser beam and heating for welding, a special dye or pigment must be added to the polymer. For medical applications, this additional colorant may require other considerations because it needs the requalification of the plastics with a new additive.
