“Our interaction with study teams gives us many ideas, as they bring us some unusual problems that we must solve,” Forster remarks. “In the past we have even built a mock laboratory – an exact replica of the trial site – to solve a problem like how to process sputum, and then we provided step-by-step video training for study teams. An understanding of the trials process has also led Labfish to provide a calibration service that sets it apart from its peers.
“We understand the technical aspects of centrifuges, refrigerators and more complex devices,” Forster adds. “We have in-house calibration capability, and we can test equipment in our calibration lab. Calibration is a core skill for us. In a trial, any audit finding can be costly. Our proactive calibration and maintenance services help prevent equipment-related findings before they occur.” The value of such a comprehensive approach has already been realised in the real world. For example, in a recent trial investigating a competitor to obesity drug Ozempic, which involved hundreds of sites and thousands of patients across 40 countries, the calibration of scales was crucial to the study’s results. Recalibration of thousands of medical- grade scales was required every year, often on tight timelines.
