Company insight Prevention of exposure
LAST Technology, a leader in contamination control solutions, is helping to protect lab personnel from hazardous drug exposure with the launch of its UCW ONCO line of cGMP washing and disinfection machines.
T
he contribution of scientific research in the field of oncology has achieved incredible results in recent years. These milestones have been made possible thanks to the work of leading scientists and technicians who, in their workplaces, deserve adequate protection from exposure to substances that could be hazardous to their health.
For this reason, representatives of the European Commission, scientific societies and institutions have decided to take stock of the current state of exposure to cytotoxic drugs, the prevention systems currently available, and the need to raise awareness about the risks associated with hazardous substances. On 9 March 2022, the EU amended Directive 2004/37/EC, resulting in the current Directive 2022/431/
EU, to ensure better protection of workers from hazardous chemicals. The new directive strengthens the protection of workers from exposure to carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic substances during their work activities.
What the new directive means Employers are now required to assess and manage workers’ risks of exposure to these substances, paying special attention to all possible routes – including skin contact. Prevention is essential to limiting the exposure of workers who handle potentially toxic substances. For this reason, the directive recommends that employers provide technicians with closed technological systems that filter and eliminate direct human contact with the
chemicals being handled or treated. To support the people who dedicate their lives to scientific discovery – often working directly with surfaces contaminated by oncology drugs or highly potent active ingredients – LAST Technology has developed the UCW ONCO line: an innovative cGMP washing and disinfection machine with a fully enclosed isolation system.
The UCW ONCO line is a closed-system solution that, through the use of special ergonomic isolation gloves, allows the safe and comfortable handling of contaminated laboratory equipment and instruments – even those presenting a high toxicity risk to operators. ●
