The power of hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used as plasma gas in the pharmaceuticals industry, LAST Technology has manufactured decontamination pass-boxes to make this process more effi cient.
H ydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) is a
compound containing peroxide ions (O-O)2
and is also a strong
oxidiser. The active substance of hydrogen peroxide is effective against microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts, fungi and viruses.
The biocidal action occurs through the peroxide decomposition, which creates the free radical OH endowed with high reactivity. The oxidative effect happens at the level of lipid membranes, DNA and other essential components for microorganisms. Finally, thanks to an effective mechanical cleansing and the development of the oxygen, the antiseptic action is achieved.
In the Pharma industry, it is common to use hydrogen peroxide by way of plasma gas, which is vaporised and injected into a decontamination chamber. In this way, a thin film of Hydrogen Peroxide on exposed surfaces is formed as quickly as possible. Once the set quantity of hydrogen peroxide has been dispensed inside the chamber, the aeration phase is completed. Afterwards, the H2
O2 vapour
is catalytically converted into oxygen and water.
This application is usually used to decontaminate thermolabile materials, such as plastic syringe tubs and nest, electronic components, pre-sterilised material, disinfectants, and more.
Vaporised peroxide decomposes rapidly in water and oxygen. Often it has already decomposed before reaching the sewer systems, which creates a low environmental impact.
The hydrogen peroxide vapour decontamination process is widely used at low temperature in the Pharmaceutical Industry.
