LAWYER OF THE YEAR – FAMILY LAW
Fiona Shackleton PAYNE HICKS BEACH
Fiona Shackleton – Baroness Shackleton of Belgravia LVO, to give her full title – repre- sented Prince Charles in his 1996 divorce from Princess Diana. Since then she has built a reputation as Britain’s most feared and re- vered family lawyer. When we asked the law- yers in our 2020 Family Law Index who they would instruct in their own – hypothetical – divorce, Shackleton’s name was uttered more than any other. One lauded her as ‘probably the greatest family lawyer of all time’. Even by her own high standards, 2021 was a banner year. Our judging panel praised her ‘magnificent handling’ of the headline-grab- bing case Re AL M, concerning the wardship of the children of Princess Haya of Jordan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Mak- toum, the ruler of Dubai. All 14 judgments, including three in the Court of Appeal, were decided in favour of Shackleton’s client.
ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR
Peter Lürssen LÜRSSEN YACHTS
Peter Lürssen was crowned Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2021 Spear’s Wealth Management Awards in recognition of his efforts to introduce greener technologies to his industry. Lürssen, who heads his fami- ly’s nearly 150-year-old yachtbuilder, is working with a client on a vessel that will be equipped with clean fuel-cell technology. It is hoped that the yacht will be launched in 2025. ‘Innovation and progress have always been in our DNA,’ Lürssen said. ‘We have devel- oped many new technologies, and many of them led to more sustainable yachts. My dream is to build the first yacht without a combustion engine. ‘Fuel-cell technology onboard a yacht is just one of many topics we are currently researching, but is probably the most ground-breaking topic in the yachting industry. ‘I’m very fortunate to have a great team of people and resources to hopefully make a dif- ference.’
PROPERTY ADVISER OF THE YEAR
Jo Eccles ECCORD
There were many impressive entries in the Property Adviser category, but Jo Eccles real- ly captured the judges’ imagination. They felt that the buying agent went ‘the extra mile’ for her clients, and that she is a skilled operator when it comes to off-market transcations. One particular anecdote stood out: Eccles organised rapid-fire Covid testing with ‘a doctor at the doorstep’ for a client, helping the would-be buyer to gain access to the
UHNW WEALTH MANAGER OF THE YEAR
Nicholas Hornby CERNO CAPITAL
As Cerno Capital nears 15 years of age, there is much to celebrate for managing partner Nicholas Hornby. With his strong leadership and entrepreneurial flair, assets under man- agement have risen by 40 per cent since 2020 to £850 million. This has been fuelled by the firm’s razor-sharp focus on high-qual- ity assets, as part of its signature Cerno Select investment strategy. The firm’s Pacific Fund, which has sought out investments across the healthcare, internet and automation sectors, achieved sector-leading returns in 2020. With 60 private clients on the firm’s books, Hornby endeavours to craft tailored portfoli- os to suit individuals’ investment objectives.
property when others couldn’t. This nifty ar- rangement ultimately secured the transac- tion, in the face of stiff competition. Eccles built her business, SP Property, from scratch in 2006, and rebranded as Ec- cord in 2021. Her clientele includes mostly UK-based buyers, as well as HNWs from the US, Israel, Australia and Azerbaijan. The firm has acquired close to 400 properties, but she assures Spear’s that ‘no client, search brief or purchase journey is ever the same’. The buying and management agency has earned a reputation for discretion, honesty and insight. ‘Our clients come to us time and time again and we handle their acquisition requirements and property management needs under one roof,’ she has told Spear’s.
PRIVATE BANK OF THE YEAR – INTERNATIONAL
Lombard Odier
Lombard Odier combines a truly global outlook with the type of ‘institutional quality’ that UHNWs require – and expect – from a private client offering.
While remaining faithful to its history, the firm has embraced a simple mantra: ‘rethink everything’. This has underpinned its commit- ment to sustainability, with green-friendly allocations and a ‘net-zero mindset’ that per- meates its investment decisions. By placing the environment at the heart of its banking agenda, Lombard Odier is aiming for long- term prosperity for clients. In 2023, it will open a sustainable HQ on the shores of Lake Geneva, which will house 2,600 employees. S
