The Of beat Sari 19 May – 17 September Design Museum, London
One of the world’s most recognisable items of clothing is to be the subject of a major new exhibition at the Design Museum. The sari – which has enduring appeal and is ubiquitous across India and South Asia today – has experienced a radical 21st century overhaul. The Design Museum will explore this reinvention in their summer exhibition, shedding a rare spotlight on contemporary Indian fashion for UK audiences.

2 Tartan From 1 April V&A Dundee
Celebrating tartan and its global impact, this exhibition explores how tartan has connected and divided communities worldwide. Tartan brings together a dazzling selection of more than 300 objects from over 80 lenders worldwide, illustrating its universal appeal through iconic and everyday examples of fashion, architecture, graphic and product design, photography, and other art and craft forms.

Clerkenwell Design Week 23 – 25 May London
CDW returns for its 12th edition, with 12 exhibition venues across Clerkenwell including: Design Fields, Contract, Light, Project, Elements, British Collection, Detail, Platform, Ceramics of Italy, Old Sessions House (the festival hub), and two new additions – Catapult and The Garden. Donatello: Sculpting the Renaissance Until 11 June Sainsbury Gallery, V&A London
This is the first major UK exhibition to explore the exceptional talents of Renaissance master Donatello. Featuring many works that have never been on display in the UK, the exhibition explores Donatello’s innovations and inspirations within the vibrant artistic and cultural context of 15th century Italy, and his influence on subsequent generations of artists.

David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) From 22 February Lightroom, Kings Cross, London
One of the world’s most acclaimed and popular living artists has created the Lightroom; an extraordinary four-storey space in Kings Cross equipped with the latest digital projection and audio technology.
