Obituary – Paul Parkin
Paul Parkin, formerly of John Gordon & Son and Howarth Timber, passed away on March 5. Mr Parkin started with Howarth Timber as a trainee in July 1975 and swiftly progressed through the ranks, becoming branch manager firstly at Dewsbury and then Wakefield, as well as British buyer for the group.

In 1998 John Gordon & Son was looking to develop its sales into the north of England and Mr Parkin was available, having parted company with Howarth Timber. So started a very successful 16-year working association that saw Mr Parkin play a significant part in the company’s growth, through developing

first joined as a forklift driver in 1997, and then managed both the timber yard and the transportation before later moving into account sales. After that, he took a role at head office, managing the fledgling joinery side of the business.

Mr Cameron’s appointment will see him continue involvement in the day-to- day running of DDS’ site in Plains, North Lanarkshire, along with developing the strategic long-term plan for the company. As director, he will continue to support the team’s growth.

becoming the longest serving employee. Having joined Wheelers Builders Merchants in 1973, Mr Wood’s employment as a yard assistant continued when Covers acquired the builders merchant’s Gosport and Portsmouth depots in 1994. He has been a dedicated and committed member of the team ever since. “Covers’ success relies on exceptional
staff like Stephen,” said Dale Lambourne, depot manager at Covers in Portsmouth. “He’s a highly valued member of our team and has been a terrific asset to Covers.”

Wood modification company Kebony has announced that Norman Willemsen has decided to leave the company after four years of service to pursue new challenges, with the mutual agreement and the best wishes of the board.
Mr Willemsen leaves Kebony with a strong track record, having led the company through an exceptionally challenging period and having progressed several key initiatives. Amid soaring input process, he improved the company’s business economics, simplified the ownership structure, and further internationalised the company, especially in North America. He championed Kebony’s mission and was a tireless advocate for sustainable alternatives to tropical hardwood in construction. Kebony’s board of directors has appointed Jean-Baptiste Clavel to succeed Norman Willemsen in the post of chief executive officer. Mr Clavel is an experienced business leader with an excellent track record of developing commercial functions and enhancing sales strategies in construction-focused enterprises.
and expanding its customer base. He was a real timber man and took great pride in being described as a genuine trader. His knowledge of merchanting was second to none.
Being a proud Yorkshireman, Mr Parkin loved his cricket and as well as being an excellent cricketer, he was an accomplished and well respected umpire for many years.
He will always be remembered in the north of Scotland with a great respect and enormous affection and more widely by those who knew him throughout the timber trade.
Mr Parkin is survived by his wife Diane and daughters Becky and Rachel.
