GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH


Taylor Maxwell has seen some major changes recently and continues to evolve and develop


Across the last three years, the UK timber industry has seen the impacts of a number of challenges; from Covid, to Brexit and more recently, bark beetles. Alongside these industry-wide events, many businesses have been through a number of changes and Taylor Maxwell is no different. A number of directors have retired from the business after long periods of service and in 2021, it was acquired by Brickability Group plc. After these busy few years, we asked managing director Alex Moffat to give us an update on where the business is now. “Taylor Maxwell has been on a journey of evolution for over 10 years now as we moved away from our traditional model of a timber agency when we first committed to holding our own stocks in the UK to widen our customer base. Importantly, it has improved the range of timber products available to our customers and with the diversity of products we offer across home- grown and imported timber, we hope to be able to provide solutions to the vast majority of timber purchasing companies across the

UK. Around 40% of our business is now from landed and imported stocks, we have five offices covering the whole of the UK and have a fantastic team, many of whom joined us as trainees and are now the next generation of our management.” Taylor Maxwell has made a number of


key appointments in its team, taking on experienced members of staff from the imported, home-grown and manufacturing industries recently and having a team of trainees completing their first year in the trade. “I look around at the team we have and am genuinely so proud,” said Mr Moffat. “We have so much experience in each of our markets, we provide our customers with the highest levels of knowledge and service as well as understanding the supply-chain intricately.”


The backing of Brickability PLC has provided us with the opportunity of additional cross selling of the wider Group’s varied products across our combined contacts and customer base, as well as access to funds for investment in the business. The first


major investment Taylor Maxwell Timber made after the acquisition was the purchase of the site and treatment facilities from PTG in Cumbernauld, Scotland. This has given the business further control over the operations of the site and has also provided it and the facades business with additional, flexible stockholding, where it now stocks its exclusive Stonepanel stone cladding, over 50 types of bricks and cast stone masonry. Taylor Maxwell Timber has been working hard to get the message to the market that its scope has grown considerably and it is now firmly in the ‘top tier’ of UK distributors. With over 500,000m3


of sales annually, a wide


range of stocked products, exclusive supply partners in the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia and, more recently, its own stock and preservative treatment site in Scotland. It is proud to have recently joined the BMF and the Trussed Rafter Association (TRA), as well as being active members of TDUK and being represented in all its regional associations. For the second year running, Taylor Maxwell will be sponsoring the
