BSW unveils investment and expansion plans for Melton businesses


Following recent investments in a new automated cross-cutting line, BSW will now be expanding into a third Melton site, where a new 100,000m3

BSW Group has announced a significant investment in its BSW Timber Solutions and Bayram Timber sites in Melton, near Hull, where it will be expanding production operations and enhancing IT infrastructure.


The company also announced the closure of the sawmill in Welshpool, Powys in December after a period of consultation, with more than 40 employees affected. A business review of the operation at Severn Farm Industrial Estate in Welshpool, had recommended ceasing operations because operating sites in both Welshpool

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in London, together with Timber Development UK (TDUK), held a meeting to engage with key UK timber stakeholders on the implications of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and the UK Forest Risk Commodities Regulation.

Emily Fripp provided an overview of regulation requirements, presenting the timeline for implementation of the EUDR, and how compliance readiness may be reshaping business strategy. It was also an opportunity to discuss Indonesia’s timber legality assurance system, SVLK, and the part it plays in preparing for regulation. The EUDR’s implementation has been deferred to December 30, 2025 for large companies, and June 30, 2026 for small companies.


Trio of companies granted Royal Warrant


A kitchen manufacturer, a timber merchant and a manufacturer of timber gates and fencing are among companies to be granted the new Royal Warrant of Appointment to The King.


British kitchen manufacturer Stoneham plc, a Royal Warrant holder to Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II since 1995,


continues to be recognised for its supply of goods and services to the Royal Households. Stoneham has also been celebrating its 160th anniversary. Frome-based timber gates and fencing manufacturer Charltons, and timber merchant Cordiners have also been granted the Royal Warrant.

The Bayram site, which has operated for over 20 years and supplies timber products to industrial end users, such as the caravan manufacturing market, will also benefit from continued investment as part of the Binderholz Group. To support these investments, the trading assets and liabilities of Bayram Timber will also be merged into BSW Timber Solutions with effect from April 2025. There will be no change to the day-to-day operations of BSW Timber Solutions or Bayram.


Timber-based Connect Modular Ltd enters administration Scottish timber-based modular housing

East Ayrshire went into administration on January 6, according to a filing posted at Companies House. FRP Advisory are believed to be acting as administrators and reports have emerged of some staff being laid off. Connect Modular, part of The Wee House Group, completed its biggest development in July 2024 – a 101-home development for Cunninghame Housing Association some 18 weeks ahead of schedule. The ground-breaking £17m project in Shortlees, Kilmarnock was delivered with the support of East Ayrshire Council and funding from the Scottish government.


Connect Modular houses are constructed in modules inside its manufacturing facility in Cumnock, where they are fitted out with kitchens, bathrooms, plumbing and electrics before being delivered to site. Connect Modular lists Velocity Modular Ltd as its parent company. Velocity Modular Ltd posted a group turnover of £11.8m in the year ended June 30, 2023 (2022: £6.6m), reflecting a 79% increase. It recorded a group pre-tax loss of £73,000.
