MARKERS IN TIME

Underground infrastructure is a snapshot, potentially even a time capsule to hold stories that show and tell what a society wanted, at scale, at a certain point and how it went about organizing itself to reach its goals. They hold so much - the visions of function and form, the insights into obstacles and potential solutions, the ways to build well and effectively, the technologies to assist, and the agreements among so many to secure the resources. Ideally, celebrations every time.

Financial profits and all-round economic gains coming to be the spin-off benefits of all the effort. Not legal wrangling, for who wants that when society wants engineers to design and to build, all to the good, and so then see the fruits of their technical labors come into service, either public or private, for generations. Legacy, truly. Markers in time. Coming together to engineer, for

the benefit of all, is then a vision to behold. For each tunnel project, large and small. For them all. That spirit leads us to cast our net

wide to see what is being pursued in different places, in North America

and beyond, and how. The insights being gained. Lessons to be shared. Current milestones to celebrate on projects. And, recalling - also to celebrate - the engineered works of past generations, borne then of visions for the needs of the future and made manifest by the technological methods of the times. We look at an array of projects

in the US and Canada, including: a delicate operation to build a rail tunnel through the raised embankment of a live highway; trenchless works offshore and onshore on separate projects dealing with water; and, internationally, large-diameter stormwater drainage in Portugal; smart cranage solutions for underground metro station building in Australia; and, a spotlight on memories of British tunnelers across five decades, published in a celebratory book. We are also pleased to preview the

trenchless sector’s major gathering, at the No-Dig Show, to be held in Denver starting late March.
