Typsa/Ramboll team wins Stockholm metro contracts SWEDEN - A Typsa/Ramboll consortium has won two of the three contracts to provide preliminary and detailed design for a new underground metro line in Stockholm. The 5 miles (8km)-long Yellow Line
from Fridhemsplan to Älvsjö is part of the national transport infrastructure development plan, funded by the Swedish government and the municipalities in Stockholm. The metro extension project will use
Typsa and Ramboll’s experience of stations, TBMs, underground structures, and mechanical and electrical engineering, and drainage. The new metro line is to have six stations
and will run through bedrock and under an inlet of Lake Mälaren. “We are proud to continue our
contribution to the sustainable growth and the urban development of Stockholm. We will bring our international experience and team of world-class TBM specialists to support Stockholm to successful completion of the Yellow Line project,” said Fredrik Lilliesköld, country director Typsa in Sweden. The Typsa/Ramboll consortium, in which
the companies are equal partners, has previously provided services and technical expertise for the extension of the Blue, Green, Red and Yellow metro lines.
CRCHI large diameter TBM for Yangtze River Tunnel CHINA - A 54.6-ft (16.64m)-diameter TBM has been manufactured by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Ltd’s (CRCHI), at its factory in Changsha, Hunan, to work on the Haitai Yangtze River Tunnel project. The TBM, named ‘Jianghai’, is
approximately 145m long and weighs 5,000 tonnes. The Haitai Yangtze River Tunnel project,
in the Yangtze River estuary area of Jiangsu Province, will stretch from Haimen District in Nantong in the north and to Taicang City in Suzhou in the south. The total length of the bi-directional, six-lane highway is 39.07km, with a cross-river tunnel length of 11.185km. The bored tunnel section is 9.3km long. It is due to be completed in 2028. The tunnel will traverse complex
geological belts such as silty clay, and silty clay interbedded with silt and fine sand. The maximum depth will be around 75m and the highest water pressure 7.5 bars.
To cope with the challenges, the TBM is
equipped with a soft soil cutterhead with accessible cutterhead and alloy cutters that are large, hard, widely covered, and wear-resistant. CRCHI said the main drive has a telescopic function that can sense the overall force of the cutterhead, effectively avoiding abnormal force caused by overload of the main bearing under special circumstances, facilitating cutter change operations, and assisting the cutterhead to break out. It is equipped with a main drive status monitoring system to continuously monitor the operating status.
Final TBM launched for Sydney Metro West AUSTRALIA - Boring has begun on the final section of tunnel for the Sydney Metro West project. TBM ‘Ruby’, the last of six TBMs to be
launched on the project, has joined TBM ‘Jessie’ in constructing 2.3km-long twin railway tunnels beneath Sydney Harbour. The 1,100-tonne machine will tunnel
alongside the Anzac Bridge, through the Pyrmont Station site, and under Darling Harbour, before arriving at its final destination at Hunter Street in the Sydney central business district (CBD). A total of 460,000 tonnes of material
is to be excavated and 16,536 segments installed by the two TBMs to construct the tunnels between The Bays and Hunter Street. The tunnels will form Sydney’s second under-harbour railway crossing. TBMs Ruby and Jessie are mixed shield
machines, designed for highly pressurized conditions that are anticipated under Sydney Harbour. Parts of the machines came from TBMs used to construct the Sydney Metro City & Southwest tunnels.
New co-cop on Stad Ship Tunnel NORWAY - The Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) is strengthening its project organization by collaborating with Statens Vegvesen (the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, NPRA) for the construction of its Stad Ship Tunnel project. NCA director-general Einar Vik Arset
said: “The NCA is considered a one-time constructor when it comes to such a large project as the Stad Ship Tunnel, so it is not ideal to build a large internal project organization; that is why we have initiated a collaboration.” Several new resources are being brought
in, including project and construction management, geology, tunnel operations,
health and safety, and workplace regulations, to prepare the project organization for the start of construction. The agreement primarily governs the
collaboration between the agencies during the tender phase and leading up to contract signing. It may be extended to cover the actual construction of the ship tunnel. The project is now in the final stages
of completing documentation and tender materials.
Gamuda Ferrovial JV planning Oven Mt hydro tunnels AUSTRALIA - Gamuda Ferrovial Construction (GFJV) has signed an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) agreement with Alinta Energy to help progress design and procurement for Oven Mountain Pumped Hydro. The ECI will last about six months for
the project to be developed on private land adjacent to the Macleay River, between Armidale and Kempsey in New South Wales. The project has yet to receive its final approvals or reach a final investment decision. Oven Mountain PS is to have upper and
lower reservoirs, an underground power plant (900MW), access tunnels, spillways, power waterway, and a transmission line upgrade.
ITA appoints new executive director SWITZERLAND - The ITA has appointed Helen Roth as its new executive director. She took up the post in January. Roth, a Norwegian national, will bring
a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record in transport infrastructure and organization administration to the position, said ITA. ITA president Arnold Dix said: “Helen’s
leadership and experience qualities are precisely what the ITA needs to navigate the evolving growth and administration of our Association.” He added that she has “proven ability to drive innovation, foster collaboration, and achieve results. Roth will oversee operation of the
Association’s Executive Council and the services of its Secretariat for ITA’s federation of 80 member nations, committees, working groups, and members, and its association with the United Nations and other global partners and collaborators. Roth has been CEO of VIA, a national
Norwegian transport infrastructure network.
