Not long to go until the next Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference, organised by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME). Held every two years, the conference and exhibition
this time will be hosted in Boston, MA, over 11-14 June. Industry leaders and practitioners from across North America and are drawn around the world to learn of the latest advances, experiences, lessons and ideas in conference sessions, and to share knowledge informally in networking. and exhibition over 12-14 June, preceded by an intense, information-packed short course, during one day of the weekend. The course is focused on ‘Shotcrete in Underground Construction’ and is a full day of information from a range of industry experts (see box panel). The topics for the conference include: design;
design/build projects; difficult ground; drill & blast; environment, health & safety; tunnel rehabilitation; geotechnical considerations; ground support and permanent/final lining; ground control, face support and monitoring; and, grouting and ground modification. More topics include: SEM/NATM; shafts and mining;
hard rock TBMs; pressure face TBM technology & case histories; large span tunnels and caverns; and, microtunnelling and trenchless tunneling. Topics to be addressed also include: risk
management; insurance; contract practices; project planning; international projects; impacts of COVID-19 on the industry; and new/innovative technologies. And, of course, topics will also consider where more
demand and work comes – future projects, if they are for new works or existing underground infrastructure assets.

located in downtown Boston, in the historic Back Bay area and directly connected to the Prudential Center and the Hynes Convention Center.
RETC Scholarships & Awards The Underground Construction Association (UCA), a division of SME, is sponsoring dozens of students to attend RETC 2023. Scholarships have been arranged to facilitate the attendance of a number of students to support their career aspirations. Three scholarship types are available – from the RETC
Executive Committee; a Conference Scholarships; and, and UCA Young Member Conference Scholarships The scholarship support covers registration and travel
for aspiring students who have applied and received the awards.
