SERVICE, FAR AND WIDE

One of the fantastic aspects of creating and maintaining infrastructure is that it is for society. People. Living together. Working. Imagining. Building. Infrastructure is a web that

binds and serves communities. It is created for that purpose. There is nobility in that purpose, that vision, no matter the varied – and many – challenges that often arise on the way, on projects big and small. Planning challenges. Funding. Design. Construction. In this issue we present further

feature articles that offer discussion and insight into the needs and possibilities for underground infrastructure. For many larger tunnel projects

the equipment is, of course, much bigger and heavier, leading to needs for powerful logistical and lifting capabilities – such a transporting and raising and moving large sections of huge TBMs, or some mucking out solutions of different kinds. We spotlight a few. On spoil handling, there is also a

review of the International Tunnelling Association’s (ITA/AITES) most recent guide on the subject.

Nations have much work with

equipment of smaller scale, especially with trenchless tunneling for utility services. We look at a water transfer project in North Dakota. Our trenchless spotlight also previews NASTT’s No-Dig North 2023 conference and exhibition to be held in Edmonton, Canada, over Oct 23-25. Tunnels for water conveyance

are feature in the context of energy, specifically pumped storage hydropower. There is increasing recognition of the benefits of such large-scale projects in North America and beyond, and their underground works typically call for excavation of adits, shafts and caverns as well as tunnels as water conduits. With such variety, there is one

constant – the technical challenges of first trying to determine what the underground environment is like: the geology and hydrogeology. We have a feature on progress with use of geostatistics and artificial intelligence to develop better ground models. Planning and building underground

infrastructure offers so much of interest.
