Raw materials

and up held firm at €1.20 per kg. Despite a slight softening in early September, the market stabilised later in the month, maintaining consistent pricing across key categories.

Turkey

Turkey’s tanning industry faces severe economic challenges despite stable hide prices. While demand for cow and bull

hides is low, limited slaughter has kept prices steady at $1.00-$1.10 for bulls and $0.70-$0.80 for cows. Interest rates, now at 50%, have stabilised the Turkish lira but driven up labour and borrowing costs, hitting exporters hard. The tanning and textile sectors are under strain, with one major tannery facing bankruptcy, risking further disruption. Lamb prices remain flat at $3.50- $4.50 per piece.

UK

The market for UK and Irish ox and heifers remained stable throughout September, with slight variations in

prices across weight categories. English 36+ hides were consistently priced at £0.70 per kg, while smaller sizes (31-35.5kg) held steady at £0.72 per kg. Irish selections also showed stability, with prices for the 36+ ranging between €0.77 and €0.79 per kg. Despite previous

expectations of a decline, prices for these categories have remained firm, although there is pressure from ongoing negotiations at fairs for upcoming months. In the lamb and sheep sector, prices stayed flat, with sheep skins priced at £1.00-£1.50 per piece and hoggets at £1.75-£2.30 per piece.

US

The US hide market showed mixed results. Heavy Texas Steers and Butt Branded Steers stayed firm at $24 and

$26, while Branded Steers softened to $21.00. Raw hide exports rose 39%, driven by China and Thailand, and wet blue sales increased 12%. However, shipments lagged, signalling possible logistical issues. Sellers held steady on pricing, but economic concerns and cautious buyers kept the market outlook uncertain.

Vietnam

In September, Vietnam’s demand for wet blue hides fluctuated. Sales fell 43% in late August, surged 128% in early

September with 67,800 pieces sold, then dropped 57% mid-month to 30,000. Sales rebounded slightly by 12% later, with 21,400 pieces sold. Shipments to Vietnam were steady, but overall September sales and shipments declined compared to August and last year. ●
