Valve and pump designs for AP1000 and AP300 projects

Celeros Flow Technology has signed a memorandum of understanding with Westinghouse Electric Co to support nuclear new-build projects in Canada and globally. The agreement offers Celeros FT the potential to design and fabricate valves and pumps for key Westinghouse AP1000 and AP300 projects. Dan Lipman, president of Westinghouse Energy Systems, said: “Celeros FT’s engineered- to-order products and solutions will help us

expand our AP1000 technology and introduce new AP300 projects in Canada and around the world.”

The new agreement recognises Celeros FT’s prominent position in nuclear flow control. It follows recent recognition by the Organisation of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI) and Ontario’s Nuclear Advantage (ONA) of the company’s significant contributions and commitment to the nuclear sector.

Celeros FT’s Canadian facility in Ontario, is one of four global locations owned and operated by the company to hold nuclear accreditation, while Westinghouse gains access to the Celeros specialist engineering and industry expertise. Its involvement in the nuclear sector began with the first-ever industrial-scale nuclear power plant, and continues with nuclear class 1, 2, and 3 pump and valve installations in more than 65% of operational nuclear power plants worldwide.

New digital dissolved oxygen sensor

Emerson has announced the release of its Rosemount 490A Optical Dissolved Oxygen sensor, a digital Modbus-enabled measurement device designed to enhance operational flexibility, simplify installation and reduce maintenance costs across many industrial applications including water/ wastewater treatment, and steam power generation. It is said to provide long sensor life without signal degradation and supports connectivity with ‘a multitude of’ host control systems

Most dissolved oxygen probes for industrial applications are made for installation in

specific and relatively benign conditions. These sensors are often only capable of communicating process values via analogue signals to control systems, and they require frequent calibration to maintain accuracy and avoid sensor drift.

To address these and other issues, the Rosemount 490A has been designed to provide reliable and accurate dissolved oxygen measurements in demanding environments, while simplifying integration into existing control systems with digital and universal Modbus RTU communication via an accompanying transmitter. In addition to producing accurate readings within 90 seconds of transition from dry to wet conditions, the sensor is capable of measuring process media in both liquid and gas phases, without requiring separate calibrations.

The sensor employs Environmental Protection Agency-approved luminescence- quenching technology, eliminating the need for electrolyte refills to significantly reduce maintenance requirements compared to traditional amperometric sensors. Its two-year sensing cap lifespan helps reduce downtime and associated costs, and it can be calibrated in free air.

Additionally, the chemically resistant IP68- rated design ensures reliable performance in challenging environments. Its small form factor, coupled with forward and rear facing 1-inch NPT threaded connections, simplifies installation in a variety of settings.

Unlike amperometric sensors, the 490A uses an optical sensor, which does not consume oxygen or require water flow for accurate measurements. Other options provide weighted orientation, anti-fouling protection, and air blast cleaning.

The sensor is accurate to ±0.1 milligramme per litre (0 to 20 mg/L) and ±2% (20 to 60 mg/L), enabling precise monitoring and control of dissolved oxygen levels. It can be paired with the Rosemount 1058 digital transmitter, which provides a diverse range of measurement signals for compatibility with numerous host control systems.
