Wärtsilä wins two orders totalling 600 MW in Mexico
In November 2021 Wärtsilä contracted to supply Mexico’s state-owned electricity utility, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), with two large multi-fuel power plants having a combined output of 600 MW. The projects will be delivered by Wärtsilä on a full engineering, procurement, and construction basis. Jointly these projects represent the largest generating capacity EPC contract ever awarded to Wärtsilä. The projects comprise a 400 MW facility, the Mexicali Oriente power plant located in Mexico’s Baja California state, and the Parque Industrial plant, a 200 MW generating unit located in Sonora, Mexico. The Mexicali Oriente plant will operate with 24 x 50DF dual-fuel engines, while the Parque Industrial plant will feature 22 x 34DF dual-fuel engines. The engines will operate primarily on gas with the capability to use liquid fuel as a back-up if required.
The awarded projects provide a clear indication of the demand that exists for flexible power plants of this size. During the summer months they will operate continuously, meeting
the high electricity demand in a region where temperatures can reach +50 °C. For the remainder of the year they will be used to provide grid balancing service. The new plants are to be completed during 2022 and 2023.
Thermal balancing services for Brazil’s grid
In November Wärtsilä contracted to supply three gas engine power plants with a combined output of 150 MW to Brazil. The contract award derived from a Reserve Capacity Auction organised by the Brazilian ministry of Mines and Energy. The three plants are to provide grid balancing duties and will be delivered on a fast-track basis, They are
scheduled to be operational in Q2, 2022. The plant’s output will be fed to the national grid assuring system reliability, for instance, during times of adverse weather conditions. The contracts include, in total, 16 fast-starting 20V34SG gas engine generating sets. The projects will be delivered on an EPC basis to existing power plant sites UTE Luiz Oscar Rodrigues de Melo and UTE Viana 1, as well as a new power plant UTE Povoação 1, all located in Espírito Santo state in southeast Brazil. Wärtsilä gas power plants are said to feature high efficiency at any load, at plant efficiency levels of up to 50 % in simple cycle, and can reach full output power within minutes of start up. They can fire natural gas, LPG, synthetic fuels and various bio-gas fuels, and are switchable. To date, Wärtsilä has delivered 2.7 GW of power plant capacity in Brazil, of which 739 MW are covered by the company’s long-term service agreements.
