CEATI: Hydrower Conference 2024 | Exhibiting the latest news

CEATI International’s Hydropower Conference – being held in California, US on 19-20 March 2024 - will focus on the opportunities and challenges that utilities are facing, with focus on retrofitting dams for extended life, extreme events and the increased need for flexibility, opportunities for power plant modernization and innovations in hydropower. Here, we take a look at some of the latest news from companies that are set to be exhibiting at this important event

Andritz

TERNA S.A., the construction arm of GEKTERNA Group based in Greece, has granted international technology group Andritz a contract to provide electromechanical equipment for the Amfilochia pumped storage complex in Central Greece. This project stands as Greece’s largest grid energy storage investment, marking a crucial milestone in the nation’s transition to clean energy.

have a total installed capacity of 680MW (generation) and 730MW (pumping) with an estimated total production of approximately 816GWh of clean and sustainable electrical energy per year. Andritz’s scope of supply includes the design, manufacture, supervision of erection, and commissioning of six reversible pump-turbine generator units, along with associated auxiliaries and ancillary equipment, governors, excitation and protection system, main inlet valves, draft tube gates as well as digital services.

HYDROGRID

HYDROGRID, a portfolio company of SET, has recently concluded a successful Series-A funding round, securing US$8.5 million to propel its international expansion initiatives and help digitalise hydropower. The funding was spearheaded by new investors Inven Capital and Karma Ventures, along with continued support from existing backers CNB Capital and SET Ventures. This funding will enable HYDROGRID to accelerate even further on its rapid growth path over the last few years, expand into new markets and enable a successful transition towards a zero-carbon future. “Despite the important role hydropower has to play

as a green battery to the grid, hydro is often viewed as the sleeping giant of the energy transition. This is because a significant part of its potential is currently underutilized due to a lack of digitalisation or due to complex regulation. And that’s what we aim to change,” said Janice Goodenough, CEO of HYDROGRID. Michal Mravec, Investment Director at Inven Capital underscores this: “At Inven Capital, we believe hydropower is vital in the transition towards a zero- carbon economy. HYDROGRID’s ability to proactively manage inflow forecasting, water management and environmental regulation and then combine it with optimal power trading, adds tremendous value to hydro power owners. The real-time, all-in-one solution allows them to increase their revenues by up to 50% and streamline their processes, enabling operators to remain competitive in a fast-paced market and regulatory environment. The positive climate impact from increasing hydro power generation by up to 10% compared to manual operation is also significant.

strong traction. The company has grown by more than 3X for two consecutive years and continues to make significant impact towards it’s sustainable development goals. The company aims to save more than 50 million tonnes of CO2 by 2033. “I have been following the development of both the

product and the company already since 2019. The outstanding level of talent and spirit of the HYDROGRID team is in my opinion the company’s greatest asset,” commented Tommi Uhari, Partner at Karma Ventures. “It makes me confident that they will continue to execute against their ambitious growth plans. That’s why we’re excited to invest alongside Inven Capital and to witness the continued support from existing investors CNB and SET Ventures. This gives the company the freedom to realize it’s vision and full potential.” The HYDROGRID Insight production planning solution integrates robust machine learning algorithms for precise inflow and power price forecasting. It offers intelligent optimization across short-, medium-, and long-term horizons for various hydro-asset types, including run-of-river, pondage, storage, and cascade facilities. This all-encompassing and fully automated software package empowers hydropower operators to respond instantly to weather events, minimize water losses, and optimize power market revenues seamlessly. The system prioritizes environmental and operational safety and compliance.
