in two parts, the bottom part weighing 27t and the top part weighing 40t. The top part was tandem lifted
for top and tail operation using 250t and 200t mobile cranes. It was then placed onto skid tracks and skidded into a temporary position. Then the bottom part was placed on the skid tracks. The top part was then lifted in order to allow the bottom to be skidded
Testing the Load
Liftek International, a supplier of lifting and rigging supplies and services across the Middle East used two Modulift spreader beams to perform a 2420 tonne load test in Dubai. Two MOD 1000 spreader
beams were used in a crucifi x confi guration to perform the test, with each beam lifting a load of 990 tonnes, and the remaining load being supported directly by the crane hook. The project was a collaboration between several specialist equipment suppliers across the world, with 600t and 500t P-6043 Green Pin shackles provided by Royal Van Beest; wireless load links, load pin shackles and T24 electronics from Load Monitoring Systems; and 110t and 50t waterbags, cable laid grommets and round slings manufactured by Liftek International. Sarah Spivey, managing
director at Modulift, said: “It’s encouraging to see our beams being used as part of such a demanding project, a real testament to the quality of our products. The MOD 1000 is ideal for this type of lift due to its relatively low self-weight. Our spreader beams are specially designed to provide a lightweight solution so that cranes can work at maximum capacity.” All products within the Modulift Spreader Beam range are compliant with ASME, BS and DNV
standards. Capacities range from 6 to 3000t and can be reused without the need to re-test or re-certify even when dismantled and reconfi gured, wherever the lift is, anywhere in the world.
underneath. Once the bottom part was skidded into final position, the top part was lowered onto the bottom part and both parts of the Steam Box were joined together for final installation. A key challenge was that the clearance while skidding was only 30mm. This meant a high level of precision had to be achieved for all measurements and markings during the operation. Also the COG of the top part of the steam box was away from both the lifting points during the lifting of the load from the trailer. This could have caused the load to slide. To avoid this, Al Faris made a
temporary packing arrangement of stools at the corner of the steam box. All technical support documentation, execution plans and HSE protocols were prepared in-house and discussed with the client prior to project execution and the operation went smoothly. With the world’s focus on the
