BTS & BTSYM | CHAIRS’ CORNER

Technically, the year was equally rich. In August,

AECOM Tunnelling Birmingham hosted a well-attended summer event featuring Jonathan Ure and Dr. Annie Wong, who shared their insights into shaft design and numerical modelling for the ‘Snowdonia Visual Impact Provision Project’. Then, in September, Dr. Juan Navarro (Maxam) delivered a masterful workshop on ‘Smart Tunnel Blasting’ in which attendees explored both classical and modern blasting models, discussed how design choices influence tunnel performance, and learned practical strategies to optimise excavation efficiency while minimising overbreak. On the same day, we had our first joint lecture with the BTS, learning about the exploratory works at the Coire Glas pumped storage hydro scheme, in Scotland. The BTSYM Conference 2025, with more than 100

attendees, was the culmination of all these efforts, making a fitting conclusion to a remarkable year. Looking back, every event and initiative was a

reflection of our goals. We engaged young engineers, created spaces where people felt they belonged, encouraged mentorship, expanded regionally and internationally, and strengthened our relationships with the wider industry. None of it would have been possible without the dedication of our Committee, speakers,

sponsors, and attendees. To all: thank you. Your energy and collaboration have made 2025 a landmark year for the BTSYM. As my term as Chair comes to an end, I feel immense

gratitude for having been part of such an inspiring group. The BTSYM is a vital platform for knowledge exchange, professional development, and building connections across the tunnelling community in the UK and beyond. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone

who has supported me throughout the years and made this incredible journey possible. I have truly enjoyed every moment of this term from the events and collaborations to the conversations that challenged and inspired me. Representing the UK at the World Tunnel Congress 2025 was an unforgettable experience and a true privilege. To my Committee, thank you for your enthusiasm, friendship, and hard work – none of this would have been possible without you. While I now hand over to Asil Zaidi, who will lead

the BTSYM into its next chapter, my involvement with the BTS continues. As a BTS Trustee until 2028, I’ll keep working to make a difference and championing the values that make our community so strong. Thank you.
