STUVA 2025 | PREVIEW
PREVIEW: STUVA 2025
The STUVA conference and exhibition takes place in Hamburg at the end of November. T&TI previews the programme and exhibition
A packed programme of lectures will welcome early winter visitors attending the next edition of the STUVA Conference and Expo, taking place in Hamburg, Germany, over 25-27 November 2025. In the following, T&TI provides a preview of the key
themes for discussion in the conference programme, and lists a large selection of the exhibitors to visit at their stands (see box on page 32). The venue for the conference and exhibition is CCH Congress Center, in Hamburg.
CONFERENCE PROGRAMME The lectures in the programme run over two full days (25-26 November) and will be followed (27 November) by technical visits to nearby tunnel projects - such as Hamburg metro’s new Line U5 and extension to Line U4, and also to the Fehmarn immersed tube tunnel between Germany and Denmark. The two days of the conference are structured
throughout with two tracks for the lectures: ● Tunnelling; and, ● Tunnel Operation & Planning.
On 25 November, the programme starts with the Official Opening, Welcome, the award of the STUVA Prize 2025, and the Opening Lecture - which will consider artificial intelligence (AI) in engineering, asking how engineers will work with it as it accelerates in capability and even if it might make engineers obsolete. Then begin the twin tracks. On the first day, Track 1
(Tunnelling) will first have a session on Deadlocks and Improvements’, to be followed after lunch with a focus on Sustainability and CO2
Reduction in Tunnelling. Running in parallel, Track 2 (Tunnel Operation &
Planning), will hear first a number of presentations in the session Large Railway Tunnels, Power Corridors, Energy Tunnels; and, then, after lunch, there will be two mini-sessions - Safety, Risk Minimisation, Tunnel Availability; and, Tunnel Ventilation. The exhibition will be open throughout the day. A Youth Forum will be held in the evening of the first
main day of the programme. The twin tracks start from first thing on 26 November.
Track 1 (Tunnelling) will move through three sessions: ● Mechanised Tunnelling; ● Ground Freezing, Underpasses, Immersed Tunnels; and,
● Tunnel Lining with Steel Fibre reinforcement, and Monitoring
In parallel, Track 2 (Tunnel Operation & Planning) has the following planned sessions: ● Digitalisation, BIM in Tunnel Operation and Construction;
● Emergency Management, Fire Protection; and, ● Tunnel Refurbishment, Sustainable Mobility through Tunnels.
As at the start, the conference programme will finish with a joint session. All attendees will be briefed on underground construction in the Hamburg region. On the following day will be technical visits to nearby tunnel projects - the metro lines, as noted above, but there are also to be short presentations on the TBM tunnelling of the ElbX project’s crossing of the Elbe River; and, again under the Elbe, the tunnelling for a district heating tunnel project.
