CONCRETE TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS | INSIGHT

Above: Silica silo and fibre dosing unit

Europe had to pass through the existing Gotthard Tunnel, which can be challenging in Summer due to significant waiting times. Oversized trucks can pass through the tunnel only once per week, at night, and only with special permission.

The total project time for Simem was less than two years and in 2024 the plant was handed over to the experts from Kibag to fulfill their part of the contract. Together with a local service partner, and the software specialist Dorner from Austria, Simem provides 24/7 support and makes sure that the batching plant runs smoothly around the clock, in Summer, Winter and on weekends. With the experienced Kibag team on site, there have been no major problems since handover. The plant is currently producing 400m3

per day and

continues to deliver shotcrete to the tunnel and concrete to the elements factory. Once the TBM has been dismantled and removed

(planned for 2027), the tunnel vault is to be lined, coated and painted. Finally, the interior of the tunnel is fitted out: the carriageway is constructed, the technical installations are fitted and then everything is tested thoroughly. This will take another three years.
