INSIGHT, BTS | SUSTAINABILITY - CARBON MANAGEMENT

Geographic route map of Copenhagen’s central metro network.

stations), tendered on a Design & Build (D&B, with ABT18) basis, using a negotiated procedure. There may be four pre-qualified bidders and offers evaluated as 50:50 price to quality. Evaluation of the carbon questions accounts for eight of the 50 marks for quality. Compliant bids will be paid for by the client.

● Advanced Works will be separate; surface-level station areas may be separate; and, there may be other packages.

Jon shared a geological longitudinal profile along

the M5 alignment (mostly tills and sands overlying limestone). He added that the project has sought to make the stations as shallow as possible, with each coming out of limestone into more challenging

ground (various sands and gravels) – and savings both costs and carbon. TBM boring will be in limestone and mixed face

conditions. Break-in/break-out of the machines at the stations will be mainly in mixed face/tills. The project received EIA approval shortly before

the presentation to the BTS. Next is the Construction Act, expected in Q3 2026. The tender, started with a pre-qualification call in June 2026, and with full tender expected later in the year, when Advanced Works tenders would also be issued. Contract award is anticipated at the end of 2027. Jon handed over to Alun to explain how the project manages carbon.

CARBON MANAGEMENT Alun discussed definitions and baselines in carbon management. A ‘carbon footprint’ is the total greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) related to doing an activity or creating an asset or product. GHGs include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other gases, and they are normally expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). National emissions are normalised by population. Construction accounts for around 8% of direct

emissions in a typical Westernised country, and the indirect emissions can be debated, Alun said. Most of the construction carbon footprint (around 70%) comes from materials — mostly cement-related and steel; the balance is from transporting materials to site and putting them in place. For Copenhagen’s metro system, the operational

energy (for running trains, lights, escalators and other station equipment) represents only 5% of its carbon footprint, helped by Denmark ‘green’ energy
