CARBON MANAGEMENT FOR METRO PROJECTS
Sharing practical insights from the carbon management of a new metro line in Copenhagen was the focus of the BTS evening meeting in November 2025. The speakers were Alun Thomas, Carbon Manager, and Jon Banyai, Innovation Engineer, of the asset owner and operator, Metroselskabet.

The British Tunnelling Society (BTS)’s evening meeting in November 2025, at the ICE in London and online, heard how carbon management is being applied in the ongoing expansion of Copenhagen’s metro network. The speakers were Jon Banyai and Alun Thomas of metro developer and operator, Metroselskabet. Jon is Team Leader for Innovation. He is a tunnelling
engineer who started his career in the UK and has worked on many types of tunnel projects around the world, including Heathrow Terminal 5, Crossrail, and the Fehmarnbelt and Marieholm immersed tube tunnels. He has supported Copenhagen Metro projects since 2012, including on M3 Cityringen, M4, and the future M5 line and M4 extension. Alun is Carbon Manager for Metroselskabet. He is a tunnel designer and specialist in sustainability. He

contributed to major projects, including Crossrail, Heathrow Terminal 5, Hong Kong Metro, Delhi Metro, and the Karahnjukar hydropower project in Iceland. He wrote a book on SCL tunnels, and in sustainability has focus on life-cycle analysis, carbon footprints, carbon management and low-carbon materials. He is active in several industry bodies, including the ITA.
INTRODUCTION Copenhagen Metro opened in 2002 and is a backbone of urban mobility, the driverless network currently comprises 44 stations with 43km of line, and operating 24/7. It carried 126 million passengers in 2024, roughly 10 million per month, and more in October 2025. There are around 360,000 daily journeys and the metro achieves a high level of customer satisfaction (98%) and operational stability
