Skanska secures two road tunnel contracts in Norway
Undersea tunnel for India high-speed lot INDIA – The National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) of India has signed a contract with Afcons Infrastructure to build Package MAHSR C-2 with major tunnelling works on the Mumbai- Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR). The package involves construction of
a 21km tunnel between Bandra-Kurla Complex and Shilphata in the state of Maharashtra, with a 7km undersea section – the country’s first twin-track undersea rail link – at Thane Creek. The long tunnel is to be constructed as a
single tube with twin rail tracks. Excavation is to be performed by three 13.1m-diameter TBMs for approx 16km of the total tunnel length and NATM will be used for the remaining 5km. The tunnels will have 39 equipment rooms at 37 locations. Afcons will build shafts at Bandra-Kurla

NORWAY – Contractor Skanska has been added to its list of tunnelling contract works in Norway with the award of two further contracts from Statens Vegvesen (the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, or NPRA) for the design and construction of two motorway sections, including tunnels, in the south and north of the country, respectively. Near to Oslo, Skanska is to
construct a 2.3km-long section of the country’s E18 motorway, which is a main route to the south from the capital. The works on the three- lane motorway section, between Fornebukrysset and Strand, are to include two tunnels – Høvik and Gjønnes. The contract value is NOK4.6bn
(US$420m) and the package include surface motorway as well as the 660m-long Høvik Tunnel and the 440m-long Gjønnes Tunnel, and also local roads plus pedestrian and cycle paths. Construction on the
Fornebukrysset to Strand section of E18 motorway is to get underway in the middle of this year. The project is to be completed in early 2030. The capital investment in the road infrastructure is being undertaken

according to environmental requirements that satisfy the ‘Excellent’ classification under the BREEAM Infrastructure. The E18 is the major connecting
road in the south of Norway and runs along the southern coastline and across the border into Sweden. The new works package being undertaken by Skanska will replace one of the country’s busiest sections of road. The contractor has also secured
two road contracts in the north of the country, one of which involves the design and construction, including a number of tunnels, and the other contract is for the operation and maintenance of the assets. The contracts are on the
82kmlong E10/rv85 road project in northern Norway and includes seven tunnels, 22 bridges. The design and construction contract is valued at NOK11.4bn (US$1.07bn), and the operations and maintenance contract for the roads has a period of 15-years. Skanska has started preparatory
works on the “E10/r85 road project” and the construction phase is expected to last for five-and-a- half years.
Complex (under package C1), Vikhroli, and Sawli at approximate depths of 36m, 56m and 39m respectively to launch and retrieve the TBMs. An inclined adit at Ghansoli and also the tunnel portal at Shilphata will give access for the NATM works. The total length of MAHSR Bullet Train
project is a 508km to connect Mumbai with Ahmedabad, in Gujarat.
Another TBM breakthrough on Vancouver subway CANADA – The second of two Herrenknecht TBMs excavating twin tunnels for Vancouver’s Broadway Subway Project has broken through at the future Broadway- City Hall Station. The breakthrough by TBM ‘Phyllis’
followed the arrival of TBM ‘Elsie’, in April. TBM ‘Phyllis’ was launched at the future
Great Northern Way-Emily Carr Station in November 2022 and excavated 1350m of tunnel and installed 884 rings. The two 6m-diameter machines are
undergoing planned maintenance following the recent breakthroughs before they are relaunched and continue boring. The breakthrough station, at 20m underground, will be the deepest station constructed on the subway project, the deeper alignment allowing the new tunnels to travel underneath the existing Canada Line. Broadway Subway Project is being
constructed by the Acciona-Ghella JV and is a 5.7km-long extension of the Millennium Line, including 5km of tunnels and six underground stations. It is scheduled to open in 2026.
