LONG, TALL, WIDE


There will be always more to say about aspects of the underground space than anyone can fully say or a publication can try to hold, even in virtual space, online. Selections need to be made. Here, we have a focus on


shafts and caverns that: covers presentations to a British Tunnelling Society (BTS) meeting and a BTS competition; discusses design, construction and technologies; looks at research pointing to more excavations on hydropower projects; and, also reviews a report on the technical topic that is packed with guidance from ITA-AITES. With regard to ITA-AITES, this is


perhaps an opportune moment to note that the World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2026) takes place next month in Montréal, Canada. A packed programme is planned, which of course will include discussions of shafts and caverns among so much else in the sessions. Lined up is also a busy exhibition of designers, contractors and manufacturers. Many opportunities will present themselves to discuss technology, experiences and business opportunities.


We provide an initial preview of


WTC 2026 at the end of this issue of T&TI. At the start, we begin with a report from a BTS meeting last year that briefed members on plans for Prague Metro’s new Line D, and which placed special attention on the planning and design of the very long, tall and wide mined caverns conceived for one of the stations. Also from BTS, we have the winning paper from the Harding Prize Competition for young engineers. The focus is on a deep and wide shaft on the Thames Tideway West contract - from the construction perspective of slipforming the secondary lining. After those features comes two


shorter articles, and also on shafts and caverns - one is the paper on hydro surge shafts/chambers, the other the ITA-AITES guidance on selection the shaft construction method. Away from shafts and caverns, we


look at how better digital workflows are helping to boost planning for rehabilitation works of motorway tunnel linings in Italy.
