INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR SOIL CONDITIONING DURING THE EXCAVATION WITH EPB TBMS:
GAME-CHANGERS TECHNOLOGIES TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WATER NEEDED
During mechanized tunnelling with EPB TBMs, a large amount of water is required for several purposes. An important contribution to the water consumption is due to the soil conditioning, especially when the excavation is in cohesive formations.
How can we change this scenario and minimize the use of this precious resource?
A new way for soil conditioning with EPB: Mapei ECO WSP (Water Saving Program) that includes a full range of products for different types of soil. Advanced soil conditioning agents have been developed to reduce the water use during EPB tunnelling without affecting the performances of the machine. Mapei ECO WSP keep the high quality of the soil conditioning reached in the last decades in a wide range of geological conditions.
The keys of the innovation ●
Optimal soil conditioning for TBM tunnelling, especially through cohesive soil with highly reduced WIR (Water Injection Ratio), up to -20% compared to other foaming agents
●
Many operative and environmental advantages due to the water reduction track to significant money saving for the Contractors, Clients and all the Stakeholders involved.
●
ECO toxicity soil conditioning products have low toxicity and high biodegradability which means lower environmental impact of the conditioned soil
Less water: which are the additional advantages? All jobsites can save thousands of cubic meters of water, the hydraulic system for soil conditioning can work at lower effort and so the TBM speed is enhanced. Where the water supplying is difficult, Mapei ECO WSP is the solution for TBM tunnelling without any compromises. Tunnelling with TBM has a lower environmental impact because of a big reduction of CO2
is a certain fact thanks to lower number of trucks needed for spoil
transport. ●
Reduced water consumption brings indeed many technical, economical, and environmental advantages, in the view of a sustainability approach in tunnel construction.
