Company insight A new era in N

ormet’s latest development, the Scamec LC Thor scaling machine was introduced in the virtual Normet Innovation Day 2022 event on 10 November 2022. It is designed in close collaboration with Normet’s customers, combining the company’s decades-long experience in developing underground equipment with scaling operators’ invaluable experience in everyday scaling work. As a result, this purpose-built machine offers better boom accuracy and handling, work area visibility and operator ergonomics and, consequently, delivers value by making the underground scaling process safer and more productive.

Safety as the priority

The Scamec LC Thor has an FOPS/ROPS- approved cabin with clear visibility due to the carefully designed structures, a reversing camera system and heated wide-angle mirrors. The cabin’s windscreen is built with 22mm-thick multi-layer glass and fitted with

underground scaling

Normet is a global technology company offering a continuous improvement to underground construction and mining processes for increased safety, productivity and profitability. Normet has a broad offering of equipment, services, construction chemicals and rock reinforcement products for underground mining and tunnelling. The newest addition to this offering is the Scamec LC Thor, improving operations and safety.

a protective grille to safeguard the operator from falling rock debris. The new boom of the Scamec LC Thor is designed to minimise the risk of rockfall hazard by projecting falling debris to the side with guiders fitted on both longitudinal boom sections. The machine can also be equipped with an emergency escape function, activating an emergency sequence for lifting the stabilisers and the dozer blade while engaging reverse gear and preparing the machine for reversing. The operator can then concentrate on steering the machine to safety after releasing the parking brake. Operator ergonomics and well-being has been a focal point in the design process of the new Scamec LC Thor. As a result, the cabin is comfortable with low noise levels and dust sealed with replaceable air filters. It is equipped with air conditioning and cabin heating for a pleasant working environment and comes with three-point contact rails and non-slippery steps, ensuring safe passage in and out of the

cabin. The operator’s seat with ergonomic armrests is comfortably cushioned and fully adjustable to the operator’s weight and size. In addition, the cabin can not only be lifted 600mm for an even more extensive overall view of the working environment, but also tilted back 15° to minimise the strain to the operator’s neck. The scaling hammer stroke is controlled with a foot pedal, allowing the operator to focus on manoeuvring the boom. All frequently- needed operating controls like the mini joysticks for accurate boom control and platform driving buttons are located ergonomically on the seat switch panels.

An agile and accurate boom for efficient scaling The machine is fitted with a completely new boom with state-of-the-art kinematics, precise control features and robust structures. The boom can be equipped with multiple different scaling tools for maximal versatility. Its advanced dust suppression system increases visibility even further and significantly improves air quality underground.

The Scamec LC Thor has an effective vertical reach of up to 9.5m and fits tunnels measuring four meters wide and 2.4m high. It is available with the latest Volvo Penta’s Stage V technology or, alternatively, with a Stage IIIA emission-rated engine, both producing 185kW of power and allowing for performance in incline driving along with upgraded retardation features with an automatic engine brake function. The automatic gear shifting of the Dana four- speed lock-up transmission enhances driving safety, allowing the operator to concentrate on steering the machine in underground tunnels. ●
