GIS crane system for the Künzli sawmill

T

he newly installed GIS crane system at the Künzli sawmill provides efficient load handling both inside the workshop and on the forecourt. To maximise the usable workspace without limiting manoeuvrability for entering and exiting, a space-saving design was essential. This was accomplished with a height- optimised crane bridge featuring a double girder configuration and a high-mounted electric chain hoist. To streamline internal material flow, the workshop at the Künzli sawmill in Krummenau was equipped with a new crane system, allowing for the smooth transport of heavy loads throughout the facility and onto the forecourt. However, spatial constraints presented a unique challenge. Due to the roof structure, the available ceiling height was limited, making it difficult to install a crane system with sufficient lifting height. At the same time, the hall needed to maintain a large working area without hindering access through the building’s entrance. Precision

was critical at every stage – planning, implementation and installation. A tailored solution was developed in

collaboration with GIS AG. The electric chain hoist and crane system manufacturer installed a compact crane bridge on the existing 20m crane runway, maximising the use of limited space. The GP1600 electric chain hoist, with a lifting capacity of 2,500kg, is positioned between the two crane girders to conserve height. The entire structure was designed with a minimal overall height to make the best possible use of the available headroom. For user-friendly operation, all crane travel and lifting movements are electric and controlled via radio

remote control. The precision of the planning and

execution is particularly evident when the crane bridge extends from the workshop onto the forecourt. The term ‘customised solution’ is often used, and in this case, it could not be more fitting. The extremely tight clearance at the building’s opening

highlights just how closely the system was adapted to the limited space. Despite these challenges, the result is a highly efficient and powerful crane system that significantly improves material handling at the Künzli sawmill.
