Fleet preview Technology:
Connectivity is a key part of the make-up of the Tonale. A world exclusive, the Tonale debuts non- fungible token (NFT) technology. This is based on the ‘blockchain card’ concept, giving a confidential and non-modifiable record of the main stages in the life of an individual vehicle. Upon a customer’s consent, the NFT will record vehicle data, generating a certificate that can be used as a guarantee of the car’s
overall status. Amazon Alexa voice assistant is also included as standard, this means you can receive updates on vehicle status from the comfort of your home, find out the level of charge and/ or fuel, search for points of interest, find your car’s latest location, and even send remote locking and unlocking commands. As standard, the Alfa Romeo Tonale comes with a new infotainment system consisting of two large displays – totalling 22.5in, a record according to Alfa Romeo for the segment – and a sophisticated, smooth, and intuitive Human Machine Interface (HMI), to put all the features at your fingertips. A customisable Android operating system and 4G connectivity offers over-the-air (OTA) updates.
Power and performance:
Reflecting the state of the market, the Tonale will only be available with a range of hybrid petrol engines. The entry engine in the new Alfa Romeo is the 130hp hybrid version, of the new four-cylinder 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with 130hp and 240Nm of torque. It is paired with seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and built in 48V 15kW and 55Nm ‘P2’ electric motor. The 160hp hybrid Variable-Geometry Turbo (VGT) engine makes its debut in the Tonale. This version has front-wheel drive and hybrid technology. Its variable-geometry turbocharger is paired with a seven-speed Alfa Romeo TCT dual-clutch transmission and the 48V, 15kW, 55Nm P2 electric motor, making it possible for this version to run on electric power alone for short distances. The range-topping plug-in hybrid Q4, the most powerful Tonale in the line-up in terms of performance and level of electrification, will be available late this year and will be of most interest to fleet. The Q4 combines the 1.3-litre MultiAir turbo petrol engine to provide traction to the front wheels, while the electric motor is connected to the rear wheels – equalling four-wheel drive. The system has a 15.5kWh battery and delivers a total output of 275hp. Alfa Romeo is claiming that this is the sportiest model in its class, with 0–62mph acceleration in just 6.2 seconds. The Tonale Q4 is also the most efficient plug-in hybrid C-SUV according to its claims, with an electric range of around 50 miles on the city cycle and 37 miles on the combined cycle. In the name of maximum efficiency, a full battery charge takes 2.5 hours when using the 7.4kW fast charger.
Safety:
The Tonale is equipped with new Alfa Romeo Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for Level 2 autonomous driving, for automatic handling of acceleration, braking and remaining within lanes while maintaining maximum driving safety. This is on top of the expected active and passive safety features, including front, side and curtain airbags.
Costs:
Prices, just like the specifications, will be confirmed in May, when the Tonale is available for preordering. Although it will just be the mild-hybrid models available first, when it launches in the UK in September.
