Fleet preview Alfa Romeo Tonale
Alfa Romeo claims that the new Tonale SUV marks the iconic sporting brand’s metamorphosis and looks ahead to a new era of connectivity and electrification, while still staying true to the brand’s DNA. Martyn Collins takes a look.
Interior:
Like the exterior, the interior draws inspiration from models of past with the hooded instruments. However, these are replaced with a TFT screen, with one of the configurable menus resulting in retro circular dials, finished in a classic design. Described as a driver- centric design, all the controls are easily accessible, whether they are physical or part of the centrally mounted 10.25in touchscreen. Space and legroom are good in the front and rear, although the curvy roofline might be a problem for taller rear passengers. There is also a practically shaped 500-litre boot.
Exterior:
Outside, the Tonale’s design is an evolution of the 2019 Geneva show car. Very much an Alfa Romeo in terms of its design, this new SUV reinterprets classic styling cues seen on many iconic models before. Highlights include the extended curve below the waistline: named the GT Line, it runs from the rear to the headlights and is said to echo models such as the GT and 8C Competizione. The roofline itself is curvy and coupe-like, with the rear window line arching heavily upward, plus the long bonnet all equalling a distinctive silhouette. At the front the ‘Scudetto’ grille shield stands out, along with the triple full LED adaptive matrix headlights inspired by the SZ Zagato. The lights are the key identifier at the rear; they are characteristically small, and now stretch right across the rear of the Tonale giving a distinctive light signature. Finishing off, the wheels, available in 17in, 18in, 19in and 20in sizes. The teledial style follows on almost unchanged from the concept car and are an evolution of the design first seen on the 1960s 33 Stradale.
Equipment:
Two trims, Ti and Veloce, will be available along with a limited Speciale launch trim for early models, which is based on the Veloce. Specifications will be confirmed closer to when the Tonale is available to order, in the summer of this year.
