Fleet preview Safety: Technology:
The Golf MK8 was the model that debuted the latest, troublesome touchscreen navigation system in 2019, that lacked backlit controls and wasn’t intuitive. For this MK8.5, the key interior highlight is the inclusion of Volkswagen’s new fourth- generation infotainment system called MIB4, which we’ve already tried in the ID7 hatch (see Page 32). Available with a standard 10.4in screen, or optionally with a bigger 12.9in screen, it’s faster, has
revamped menus, looks far smarter, and debuts a new ChatGPT-powered voice assistant, that is used to control the air-conditioning, telephone, navigation system, and even the internet. The Golf continues its front-drive, four-cylinder format, with mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, plus turbocharged diesel, and petrol engines. The only engine changes are more power for the 2.0-litre TSI, which with 201hp, makes 13hp more. Plus, the GTi, which now makes 262hp, 20hp more than before, but is now auto-only.
New safety technology debuting on this Golf, is Volkswagen’s 360-degree view, Park Assist Plus and Park Assist Pro, which effectively means that you can park your new Golf via a smartphone app.
Equipment:
Volkswagen has yet to share any specific specifications for UK Golf models – but we would expect them to be comparable to or better than European-spec cars. Entry-level models there include Climatronic automatic climate control, the enhanced
multi-function steering wheel, keyless locking and start, and front and rear parking sensors.
Costs:
Like the specifications, Volkswagen haven’t shared any specific UK pricing for the new Golf MK8.5, but prices are expected to start at a similar level to the outgoing car, when it goes on sale in April.
