LOOK OUT FOR FOUR TO FORD RANGER
Based on the standard Wildtrak but using the entry-level twin-turbo 2.0-litre engine with 10-speed auto gearbox, the X stands out due to its upgraded Bilstein dampers that give it more off- road potential than the standard setup. It’s mirrored in the range by the Tremor, which gets the same suspension, but is based on the XLT model in the range. As a Wildtrak, the X gets a higher level of trim with 12in infotainment screen, leather steering wheel, part-leather heated seats, LED headlights and 17in alloys. The Wildtrak X is also the first vehicle in the range to get access to Ford’s new party piece large item carrying solution. The sports roll hoop at the rear of the

cabin on the loadbed is moveable and can be slid along the full length of the body, while the roof rail bars fold out horizontally to create a roof rack. That means that long items like ladders, or surfboards can be strapped to the hoop and roof rack, dramatically increasing the versatility of the pick-up. It’s an ingenious concept and a massive positive for the Ranger compared to its competitors.

If you’re looking for a shrinking violet of a light commercial vehicle then you probably won’t be heading down to your Isuzu UK dealership to check out the special edition D-Max AT35, the Icelandic 4x4 conversion specialist that developed the vehicle in partnership with Isuzu UK. To say the AT35 has ‘presence’ is an understatement. The AT35 got its name from 35in tyres fitted to 17in alloy wheels. The importer installed a Bilstein performance suspension system featuring front springs and dampers, rear dampers and additional front and rear body lift, which gives a ground clearance increase of 50mm compared with the standard D-Max, to 266mm at the

front and 290mm at the rear, allowing an approach angle of 35°, a departure angle of 29°, and a break over angle of 34°. D-Max was the first UK-sold pick-up to gain the maximum five-star safety rating in the new Euro NCAP test. Every D-Max gets Forward Collision Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Speed Limiter, Lane Departure Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking.

MAXUS T90EV
Maxus has adopted a bold electrification strategy, becoming the first brand to introduce a battery-powered pick-up truck – the T90EV. Features include a 10.25in touchscreen in the cab, a reversing camera, LED daytime running lights and 17in alloy wheels. The truck is currently offered in a single trim level. Despite the battery pack sitting beneath the floor of the truck, it has a claimed wading depth of 550mm. The T90EV has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 3,300kg and is powered by an 88.5kWh battery pack wedded to a 150kW (204hp) electric motor, giving it a claimed range of up to 205 miles. A DC fast charge from 20%

to 80% takes 45 minutes, according to Maxus, but an 11kW AC charge from 5% to 100% takes nine hours. This rises to 13 hours for a 7kW AC fill. When driving in traffic or on the open road the regenerative braking is efficient but not overbearing. The electric power- assisted steering though feels light and jittery, which does not inspire confidence when not travelling in a straight line.

The Musso received a facelift a couple of years ago, with new front-end styling giving the truck a tough and purposeful look. Short and long-wheelbase models are marketed, power comes courtesy of a 202hp 2.2-litre diesel delivering 12% more power. It is married to a six-speed manual gearbox if you opt for the entry- level EX. Everything else comes with a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission. Payload in the SWB Saracen tested here is 1,059kg and you can carry a full payload and haul a 3.5t trailer at the same time. Gross permitted train weight is 6,750kg. The cabin offers a heated steering wheel and front seats. Unusually on a light commercial, those seats also boast a cooling function for hot weather.

A 12V power socket is provided along with dual USB ports. The infotainment package includes TomTom satellite navigation and a DAB radio along with Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Musso Saracen’s ride is on the nervous side when unladen but in-cab noise levels are well- suppressed and the truck handles well even when pushed quite hard.
