UCA-NI NEWS

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

As we move into the summer months, it’s not just the weather that is brightening up; there is a genuine feeling of hope as progress is being made in the fight against COVID.

By Peter Rice, UCA-NI Chairman T

he flu vaccination programme last year demonstrated the value of pharmacy as a vaccination provider. When it came to

COVID vaccinations, pharmacy was an obvious fit. Despite the initial issues with vaccine availability, the new pharmacy vaccination service is an integral part of the health service’s strategy both now and for the continuing management of COVID.

I was delighted with the uptake of the vaccination training provided by Coastal Core in partnership with the UCA. I attended one of the sessions myself and found it very professional and informative. A number of the pharmacists on the course were preparing to provide vaccinations the following day.

It was fantastic to see the endorsement of both our Health Minister and our Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for community pharmacy, as they both chose to receive their COVID vaccination in their local pharmacies.

This endorsement demonstrates the value they place in community pharmacy and is reflected in

the announcement of an agreed commissioning plan for community pharmacy for 21-22. The plan provides a structure for pharmacy services throughout the year and you can read more about it from CPNI Chief Executive, Gerard Greene, in his article.

With this positivity in mind, we are opening nominations for the Pharmacy in Focus awards that we hope to host in Crowne Plaza Hotel, Shaws Bridge early next year. I am sure there are plenty of very deserving candidates and I encourage you to all enter and wish you the best of luck!

Finally, I’d like to offer my best wishes to the current pre-registration students as they prepare for their exam. It has undoubtedly been a very unusual and difficult year for them, with a significant portion of their training provided online.

I am sure that their experiences this year have more than prepared them for their future in the profession - no matter what is thrown at them.

Administration Assistant, Natalie Mulholland, will be leaving UCA at the beginning of June to take up a new role. On behalf of the UCA-NI Board and the many community pharmacies she has helped and supported over the past six years, I would like to thank Natalie for all her hard work and wish her the best of luck for the future.

COVID-19 VACCINATION SERVICE

When the community pharmacy Vaccination Service was announced, UCA-NI answered the call from pharmacists for training to boost vaccinator numbers. We worked with experienced training company Coastal Core Ltd to create a live programme covering all the service training requirements. Director and pharmacist Robert Wheeldon took up the challenge.

‘Coastal Core Ltd, in partnership with UCA-NI, is delighted to deliver classroom-based and online COVID-19 vaccination training to both healthcare professionals and non-health care professionals. The response and support to the training has been incredible, with training rolled out to three locations across Northern Ireland. As a pharmacist myself, involved in delivering the vaccination service, I understand the importance of quality hands-on training with an experienced tutor to instil confidence in your technique.

'On behalf of Coastal Core Limavady and UCA- NI, I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Antrim and Newtownabbey Council (Antrim Civic Centre) and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council (The Marketplace Theatre) for the use of their facilities to enable us to deliver the training.

UCA-NI’s Adrienne Clugston praised the calibre of the training.

‘It’s great to know that we have helped train over 100 pharmacists to become vaccinators, plus provide extra training to existing vaccinators,’ she said. ‘To receive glowing praise for the course from participants is extra welcome. It is fantastic to know that the training was ‘excellent, very informative, hands on and interesting’, with ‘engaging content and demonstrations’, and that it helped people ‘feel a lot more confident now and able to administer vaccines completely'.

For anyone looking to take part in the training, further dates are being released. Please contact the Coastal Core office on 028 7776 5469 for more details, or visit www.coastalcore.co.uk
