FOUNDATION TRAINING YEAR RECRUITMENT PROCESS FOR 26/27

Interviews for the 26/27 Foundation Training Year were held week commencing 15th September. Organised and administered by the team at NICPLD, the remote Multi-Mini Interviews were conducted by a group of trained assessors, made up of Pharmacists and HR specialists from both sectors.

Successful students will be ranked and the top 200 invited to preference pharmacy placements in both the hospital and community sector. Allocations of students to placements will be

made on the basis of those preferences and communicated by the end of the year.

To keep providers informed, an employer engagement event will take place in January. This session will update placement providers on the process to date and outline the next steps towards student allocation.

An updated Employers Guide will also be issued outlining the process and employers’ responsibilities.

A review of the process will be carried out with a view to update the selection and admission process for 2027-28.

For employers wishing to connect directly with undergraduates interested in pharmacy careers, QUB are holding a Careers Fair on Wednesday 26th November and UU’s Fair is on Wednesday 3rd December. UCA-NI & CPNI will be representing community pharmacy at both events.

Please get in touch if you have any questions or concerns about the new process.

FTY2526 – GET READY FOR FEBRUARY TRAINEES

Placements for the August-January cohort are well underway and UCA-NI has been engaging with trainees through the Community Pharmacy Management Programme.

Like any other Foundation Training year, they tell me they are thoroughly enjoying their experience working in community pharmacy, transitioning from student to pharmacist and suffering from the inevitable sore feet along the way!

They are also apprehensive about the time they have in community pharmacy and the change of environment when they move into their hospital placement.

February-July Foundation Trainees Like you, UCA-NI is starting to think about the next cohort. I will be in touch with you all soon to invite you to enrol your Foundation Trainee on the UCA’s support programme – Community Pharmacy Management Programme. The programme focuses on business principles – finance, service delivery and people management. More detail is included below.

From October, UCA will invite you to use our Umbrella Body Service for AccessNI checks. On your FTY25/26 Framework declarations, pharmacies are asked to complete an Enhanced AccessNI check for incoming Foundation Trainees. The check should be completed one month prior to the start of the FT Placement.

Businesses need to have 20 checks to register directly with AccessNI, otherwise you need to use an Umbrella Body Service to help you complete this process.

AccessNI - what do you need to do? UCA-NI will provide you with information & template documents to sign up for the Umbrella

Body Service and follow AccessNI guidance. As an Umbrella Body, UCA NI provides you and your trainees with guidance on how to apply for the checks, which are completed online through NIDirect. The trainees must also provide information to UCA-NI to complete the identity verification process.

Once completed, the trainee will receive an online certificate. UCA-NI, as the Umbrella Body is notified and we will in turn alert the pharmacy that a certificate is available. You can then contact the trainee and complete the process.

Find out more in the Foundation Training Year area on the UCA-NI website www.ucani.co.uk or contact Adrienne Clugston – adrienne@ucani.co.uk

FTY Grant The salary element of the FTY grant is currently calculated as: National Living Wage for 21+ x 37hrs per week.

If you employ your Foundation Trainee for more than 37 hours per week, please ensure that their salary is still equivalent to the NLW rate for 21+ (now £12.21ph) x the number of hours worked each week to ensure that you are abiding by national minimum wage requirements. Note that protected study time is considered part of their working week.

Community Pharmacy Management Programme

UCA-NI has launched a new-look Foundation Trainee support programme to help trainees prepare for life as a Community Pharmacist.

Due to the change to 6-month placements, we have created a 3-day intensive programme replacing our very successful Foundation Trainee

Leadership and Management Programme which so many pharmacies enrolled their trainees on.

Focusing on the main aspects of Community Pharmacy management and being a Responsible Pharmacist, the UCA-NI programme content reflects the core requirements of community pharmacy employers and preparing Foundation Trainees for roles requiring business and management skills.

The programme will run within the 6-month placement period in Community Pharmacy, allowing participants to put their learning into practice immediately.

Course content Day 1: Successful Business Management • Effective purchasing and reimbursement • Prescription coding / submission • Use of technology • Service delivery • Private service development • Marketing / outreach

Day 2: Effective People Management • Improving customer experience and reducing risk of complaints

• Team motivation and development • Being a Responsible Pharmacist • Critical thinking and effective decision making

Day 3: Vaccination Training

The £375 + VAT fee will include the AccessNI service fee and enrolment for both cohorts.
