THIS WILL CHANGE THE WAY I TREAT PATIENTS AND HOW I ACT WHEN IN SURGERY


This represents the most substantial transformation in pharmacy education since its establishment as a degree-level qualification in 1967. The InterSim Pharmacy Fellow role is essential to enhancing our simulation-based educational practices, ensuring alignment with evolving educational standards and the needs of future healthcare professionals.


Immersive Simulation for Aging and Neurodiversity One of the first projects Siobhán has undertaken involves working with an interprofessional team of Pharmacists (QUB), Dentists (QUB) and Occupational Therapists (Ulster University). This project harnessed the opportunity to use the environment and technology of the InterSim to give students an immersive experience as an elderly individual and as a neurodiverse individual. The team co-designed two immersive scenarios with an interprofessional group of practitioners, academic and patient experts.


In scenario one, students experienced an immersive environment replicating a dental


surgery which had been modified to replicate the sensory overload which can be experienced by neurodivergent patients in clinical environments. They completed maths questions as cognitive challenges in this environment.


In scenario two, students partnered up once more with a student from another profession to take it in turns to wear an ageing suit and complete tasks involving collecting a prescription, being counselled on multiple medicines and organising medicines for a day trip. The aging suit replicates visual impairments, hearing impairments, fatigue, joint restrictions and reduced tactile sensation in the hands.


Evaluation and Impact This innovative interprofessional simulation event received an extremely positive response from students as illustrated by the quotes below.


Empathy: “It was a really good way to put yourself in someone else's shoes, to actually experience the feeling of being overwhelmed or not being able to see properly” (Pharmacy student)


Professional development: "This will change the way I treat patients and how I act when in surgery“ (Dental student)


Collaboration: "It was good to get to know [other healthcare professionals] and work alongside others" (Occupational Therapy student)


The immersive technique certainly introduced students to the significant challenges faced by these specific patient groups and emphasised the need for reasonable adjustments to ensure equality in health outcomes.


Further research completed in the months following the experience has shown that students out in placement have put what they have learnt into action already.
