What is Erectile Dysfunction? Erectile dysfunction, commonly referred to as ED or impotence, is a condition where a man experiences consistent difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection firm enough for sexual activity.


Causes and risk factors Numerous factors can contribute to ED, making it a complex issue. Common physical causes include conditions that hinder blood flow to the penis, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Peyronie's disease, surgery or injury, and sleep disorders.


On the psychological front, anything that affects the level of sexual desire (libido) can also cause erectile dysfunction because a reduced libido makes it more difficult for the brain to trigger an erection. Psychological conditions can reduce libido, as can changes in hormone levels. Factors like depression, anxiety, stress, relationship problems, lack of sexual knowledge, past sexual problems or past sexual abuse, performance anxiety and being in a new relationship can contribute. Lifestyle choices, like smoking, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, lack of exercise and poor diet, can also be culprits.


In some men, certain medicines including diuretics, antihypertensives (beta-blockers), fibrates, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, antihistamines and cytotoxics can cause erectile dysfunction. Using illegal drugs, such as cannabis, heroin or cocaine could also be a cause of ED.


Age is another factor. While ED can affect men of any age, it becomes more common as men get older. It is estimated that half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 will have ED to some degree.1
