PHARMACY FIRST EVERYTIME!

If anything positive is to be found in the current COVID-19 global pandemic, it is the fact that community pharmacy has continued to demonstrate the vital patient care it delivers in primary care.

C

OVID-19 has changed the way in which many of us work forever. Yet, in the midst of all the challenges the virus has created,

community pharmacists and their teams have adapted the way they work to ensure they continue to provide their patients and the public with a high standard of care, often in the face of very challenging circumstances.

In addition, on 29 July 2020, the community pharmacy teams in Scotland launched the NHS Pharmacy First Service, replacing the Minor Ailment Service which had been delivered by community pharmacies since 2006.

This represented one of the biggest changes to the community pharmacy service delivery across Scotland in recent years: a new service launched during the pandemic and delivering enhanced care and support for patients.

The service advises and encourages patients to go to their community pharmacy first for the treatment of minor ailments, such as acne, head lice and athlete’s foot, as well as a range of common clinical conditions.
