NPA IN FOCUS
Janice Oman Scotland Representation Manager
The National Pharmacy Association is celebrating its 100th birthday this year with a series of activities including special recognition for some of its longest standing members. We want to thank all our members in Scotland for being with us on our journey to date – and we look forward to meeting your ever-changing needs long into the future. Members can visit our dedicated centenary web page at

Pharmacy Stories NPA members have been telling us about their life and times in community pharmacy, as part of the Association’s centenary celebrations. Here is an excerpt from Lindsay & Gilmour’s story, one of the oldest pharmacies in Scotland, which has been an NPA member for nearly half a century:
Originally established by Robert Lindsay in 1826 it has been trading from the same site, in Elm Row, Edinburgh ever since. Today, there are over 31 Lindsay & Gilmour pharmacies spread across East and Central Scotland, the Borders and Fife, which offer a wide range of pharmacy services.
Phil Galt, its Managing Director and Superintendent Pharmacist, joined the business in 2014 and says he feels proud of being part of a pioneering organisation.
‘It is great that we are still a family owned organisation, fourth generation now, after all these years. Our ethos is very much about putting people at the heart of everything we do. Anything that I or the team do is all about making it a better place to work for our colleagues and accommodating to our customers. It’s a simple strategy – look after your staff and they’ll look after your business and customers.
‘We’ve got a proud heritage, however we are a modern, forward thinking innovative healthcare business, always pushing forward.’
During the very early onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Phil implemented video calling in Lindsay & Gilmour.
‘We had to adapt as things were changing on an hour to hour basis and it proved incredibly helpful.’
Phil values the advice he gets from the NPA’s Scotland Manager (Janice Oman) and the backing of NPA Insurance which he describes as ‘without doubt, the standout insurance provider’ for pharmacy owners.
‘For me,’ he says, ‘as a superintendent, having the reassurance of a gold plated professional indemnity insurance behind me to support and protect our pharmacists is crucial.’
Phil believes Lindsay & Gilmour have always been a vital part of its local communities but now that statement rings truer than ever before.
‘I believe pharmacy has weathered the COVID storm better than anybody
ASYMPTOMATIC TESTING ON ARRAN
It is now even easier to access rapid coronavirus (COVID-19) testing for those without symptoms on Arran, with a collection point available to pick up testing kits.
The community testing initiative aims to drive down local COVID-19 rates and transmission by identifying positive cases more quickly, as people can spread the virus to others before symptoms appear.
‘Testing will help us to identify more cases of the virus and give us all a better chance of stopping it from spreading,’ said Lisa Davidson, Assistant Director of Public Health for NHS Ayrshire & Arran. ‘It is important that you are tested regularly, particularly if you are a key worker and must attend work. Even if you have been vaccinated, it is still important that you get tested regularly. This is particularly important if you are visiting a loved one in hospital or a care home.’
These kits are only for people without symptoms. Anyone on Arran with COVID-19 symptoms, or anyone who has been identified as a close contact, should book a test in the usual way by calling 01770 601033.
