DIABETES TECHNOLOGY: WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON

As the number of people with diabetes continues to grow, the medical devices designed to control the condition also grows. SP looks at what’s in the pipeline this year…

T

here’s no doubt that this year will see people with diabetes (PWD) having the technology that will give them the ability to

control their medical devices via mobile smartphone apps – and that includes remote insulin dosing!

One of the most exciting developments will be that PWD will be able to control their medical devices via mobile smartphone apps.

Pump it up! The new t:sport pump from Tandem is a micro- pump hybrid that’s about half the size of the t:slim X2 pump, but doesn’t have the display screen.

The new pump will be half the size of the t:slim, which is already fairly sleek as far as insulin pumps go. That means that pump users won’t have to look at - or even touch - their insulin pump in order to order a bolus or change their delivery settings: a huge win for discretion and ease-of-use.

Abbott FreeStyle Libre 3 Known as a Flash Glucose Monitoring (FGM) Trusted Source system, the FreeStyle Libre from Abbott Diabetes provides a ‘flash’ of a glucose reading whenever the PWD scans the sensor with the handheld receiver or smartphone app.

Unlike the Libre 2, which became available last year, the Libre 3 is smaller and thinner than the previous device and doesn’t require any sensor scanning to provide real-time glucose readings. As such, Libre 3 generates real-time glucose reading every minute and displays that result on the compatible mobile app on iPhone or Android.

New Roche system shares data seamlessly Roche has launched its new Accu-Chek Instant system. The system features Bluetooth® enabled connectivity to the mySugr app, allowing wireless transfer of blood glucose results to the mySugr app. This app offers users

quick insights to their diabetes data in addition to diabetes management features like the mySugr insulin calculator.

Data from the mySugr mobile app can also seamlessly be shared with healthcare professionals (HCPs) via the RocheDiabetes Care Platform (RDCP), in near real-time. This integration between the RDCP and the mySugr app enables HCPs to view their patient’s blood glucose monitoring data during consultations, allowing for more meaningful consultations.

New CMGs on way! While the G6 was classed as the gold standard of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), it’s expected that the fully-redesigned G7 will be both smaller than the G6 and, more importantly, completely disposable, so there will be no reusing. It will also start off at ten-day wear like the current G6 version, but will eventually support longer wear for up to fifteen days.

PEOPLE WITH DIABETES WILL BE ABLE TO CONTROL THEIR MEDICAL DEVICES VIA MOBILE SMARTPHONE APPS – INCLUDING REMOTE INSULIN DOSING!
