Lighting Guide 9 states that “Lighting should be designed to produce a generally domestic atmosphere.” Communal spaces such as lounges and dining rooms should have an average illuminance of about 200 lux at table height (approximately 0.7 m  switched luminaires to allow for different types of activity as well as local areas of illumination or task lighting to allow for reading etc.


  to provide good lighting without glare to help elderly people to circulate their living  issues should also be planned for such as the position of light switches so they can be easily reached and low level lighting to allow for  at night.


Lighting Guide 9 also recommends corridor lighting should be dimmable reverting to full illuminance when activated by presence detection. The lighting design should avoid both shadowing and glare to prevent confusion of the occupant. Luminaires with   changing to high level lighting when movement is detected.
